Team USA continues its reign at the top of women’s basketball. Breanna Stewart scored 22 points, Jackie Young added 18, and the United States defeated France 97-79 on Sunday to capture its fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup championship and 12th title in tournament history.

The victory extended the Americans’ historic dominance on the international stage, improving their World Cup winning streak to 36 consecutive games, dating back to the semifinals of the 2006 tournament, when they suffered their last defeat against Russia.

The championship also reinforced Team USA’s incredible record in gold-medal games. After finishing second in 1983 to the Soviet Union , the Americans have now won nine straight World Cup finals .

France, meanwhile, achieved its best-ever finish in the competition by reaching the silver medal position, but the result came with a sense of disappointment after coming within one point of defeating the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympic final . The French entered the matchup hoping to turn that near upset into a historic breakthrough victory.

Despite the loss, France showed it belongs among the world’s elite. Dominique Malonga led the way with 21 points, while Gabby Williams added 20 in a valiant effort against the reigning champions.

With another dominant performance on the biggest stage, Team USA added another chapter to one of the greatest dynasties in international sports.
