The Boston Celtics have spent much of the offseason reshaping their roster, but their latest move is focused on keeping one of their most dependable players in place for the foreseeable future.

Payton Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension, according to ESPN's Shams Charania, rewarding his development from a championship-winning reserve into a proven NBA starter.

The agreement adds two seasons to Pritchard 's existing contract, with a mutual option for 2029-30 potentially keeping him in Boston through the end of that campaign.

It also represents a substantial financial increase for a player whose previous four-year, $30 million extension became one of the league's most team-friendly contracts.

Pritchard rewarded after breakout Celtics season

Pritchard 's rise has been particularly impressive since helping Boston capture the 2024 NBA championship, when he established himself as a valuable contributor off the bench.

He followed that success by winning the 2025 Sixth Man of the Year award before delivering the most productive campaign of his career last season.

Across 79 appearances, including 50 starts, Pritchard averaged approximately 17 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds while helping the Celtics finish with 56 victories.

His expanded role became especially important during Jayson Tatum 's recovery from an Achilles injury, when Boston required additional offensive production from its backcourt.

The new extension will begin in 2028-29, with Pritchard still scheduled to earn $7.8 million this season and $8.3 million in 2027-28.

Major adjustment following Jaylen Brown trade

Boston's decision to secure Pritchard comes during a significant transition following the departure of Jaylen Brown , who was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George .

The Celtics also moved Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers , further increasing the importance of their remaining guards.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla must now determine how Pritchard fits alongside Tatum, George and Derrick White , particularly after using him in both starting and reserve roles.

Although Pritchard came off the bench during his preseason debut against Philadelphia , he scored 25 points and demonstrated the attacking ability Boston will need throughout the campaign.

Mike Conley praises dedication and leadership

Veteran guard Mike Conley , who joined the Celtics during the offseason, has already been impressed by Pritchard 's approach to improving his game.

"Payton's a menace, man," Conley said earlier this month. "He's an absolute crazy person when it comes to trying to improve his game."

Conley also praised his younger teammate's willingness to learn, highlighting the questions he asks and his determination to develop despite already establishing himself as an accomplished NBA player.

"I've been impressed with just the awareness to ask questions… Just really showing that humility, showing that he's willing to grow and be a better player," Conley said.

Pritchard has also demonstrated exceptional durability, missing only five games since the beginning of the 2023-24 season.

That reliability, combined with his improving production, has made him increasingly valuable to a Celtics organization seeking to remain competitive through significant changes.

With his future secured, Pritchard now faces the challenge of translating his individual progress into another successful chapter for Boston.
