Kawhi Leonard is finally heading back to the Toronto Raptors , bringing an end to a lengthy saga that was complicated by the NBA’s investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Clippers and Raptors have agreed to complete the blockbuster deal, with Toronto acquiring Leonard in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick , two unprotected first-round selections, a first-round pick swap and two second-round picks.

The agreement was initially reached in June but was put on hold while the league investigated potential salary-cap violations.

The NBA announced its findings on September 2, determining that the Clippers had engaged in a pattern of misconduct involving off-court income opportunities connected to Leonard .

The league said the organization helped facilitate endorsement arrangements with companies doing business with the team and failed to properly report certain activities.

The investigation had cast uncertainty over Leonard's future and delayed a trade that could now significantly reshape both franchises. With the league's ruling delivered, the Raptors and Clippers have been able to move forward with the long-discussed deal.

Toronto reunion finally becomes reality

The penalties imposed on Los Angeles were substantial. The Clippers lost five first-round picks covering the 2029 through 2033 drafts and were hit with a $30 million fine.

Owner Steve Ballmer received a one-year suspension, while several other senior Clippers executives were also suspended.

Leonard was fined $700,000 for his connection to the violations, but the NBA didn't suspend him or void his contract. The league also determined that his uncle, Dennis Robertson , played a role in facilitating the arrangements and prohibited him from conducting business with NBA teams and affiliates for five years.

Leonard's return carries enormous significance for the Raptors, as he spent the 2018-19 season in Toronto after arriving from San Antonio and immediately helped deliver the franchise's first NBA championship.

Leonard averaged 26.6 points per game during the regular season and raised that figure to 28.5 points during the Finals.

His memorable Game 7 buzzer-beater against the Philadelphia 76ers became one of the defining moments in franchise history before Toronto eventually defeated the Golden State Warriors to capture the championship.

Leonard's seven seasons with the Clippers have produced impressive individual numbers but considerably less postseason success.

He averaged a career-best 27.9 points per game last season, along with 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists, while shooting efficiently from the field and three-point range.

Despite his production, Los Angeles finished 42-40 and missed the playoffs, adding to the growing questions surrounding the team's direction.

Toronto, meanwhile, is coming off a 46-win campaign that ended with a first-round loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Raptors had returned to the postseason for the first time since 2022, giving the organization renewed optimism heading into the new season.

Now, Leonard's arrival could raise those expectations considerably. Toronto will look to combine his experience and scoring ability with a younger core led by Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett.
