Cooper Flagg has already established himself as one of basketball's most closely watched young stars, and his sports-card market has now produced a record-breaking moment of its own.

The Dallas Mavericks forward's one-of-one Topps Chrome Update Rookie Debut Patch Autograph sold for $8.04 million in Fanatics Collect's September Premier Auction, making it the most expensive basketball card ever sold featuring a single player.

The auction attracted 83 bids, with a remarkable late surge pushing the price from $3.5 million at around 9 p.m. ET Thursday to $8.04 million by approximately 2 a.m. Friday.

The timing is significant. Flagg was selected first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft and followed his highly anticipated arrival with an outstanding rookie campaign.

He averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists over 70 games, while also becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points in a game. He was subsequently named the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year.

The card's rarity is another major part of its appeal. It's a genuine 1-of-1, meaning there's no second copy of the same card.

It features a piece of the jersey Flagg wore during his NBA debut, along with his autograph, and carries a PSA Gem Mint 10 grade. Rookie Debut Patch Autographs were introduced to basketball with the 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update release, creating a direct connection between a rookie's first NBA appearance and an individual collectible.

A historic sale doesn't guarantee a profitable investment

The story behind the card's journey makes the final price even more extraordinary. Collector J ason Williams reportedly acquired the card after paying $515 for a spot in a Rhode Island livestream card break. The card was subsequently consigned to Fanatics Collect for auction.

Flagg's $8.04 million result also towered over two other notable debut-patch sales from the same auction. Dylan Harper's card reached $2.88 million, while Kon Knueppel's sold for $2.34 million.

Fanatics says Flagg's card ranks as the third-most expensive NBA card sale overall, behind two dual-player Logoman cards featuring legendary combinations of NBA stars.

But the enormous price tag raises an obvious question over whether the card will actually justify an $8 million valuation over time.

That's impossible to know today. Flagg's rookie season provides plenty of evidence of his potential, but his career is still in its earliest stages. His future accomplishments, including individual awards, playoff success and championships, could influence how collectors view his legacy years from now.
