Dominique Wilkins' daughter makes it clear that her father's priority was never his children: “That's why his relationships don't last either”
Wealth, fame and complicated family loyalties have created lasting resentment

Behind the celebrated career of Dominique Wilkins , his daughter Ayisha Wilkins says there was a family struggling with the consequences of his wealth, loyalty and inability to establish boundaries. The nine-time NBA All-Star became known as The Human Highlight Film during his years with the Atlanta Hawks , but Ayisha claims the success that made him famous also complicated his relationships with those closest to him.
Ayisha discussed her childhood and the experiences explored in her memoir, The Price of Privilege , describing a family structure in which she often felt overlooked for other members. Her central criticism was that Wilkins consistently prioritized his mother and siblings, sometimes leaving his own children waiting for financial assistance and emotional support. "So, his actual children,” Ayisha said to the From Christal XO podcast.. “Like myself, my sister Chloe, you know, my brother—his actual children, you know, it's like we couldn't hardly get anything sometimes. "But we're your children. Like, they're not your kids. We are. Like, we should come before them. But his siblings and mom, everyone has always come before anybody, you know? Which is why his relationships don't last, too." Ayisha suggested that this hierarchy became a recurring source of tension because family members understood that Wilkins would ultimately side with his relatives during disagreements. Her comments represent her personal account of events, and Dominique has not publicly responded to the specific allegations discussed in the interview.
Daughter Ayisha believes fame changed Dominique Wilkins' priorities
Ayisha also questioned whether decades of celebrity and financial success had affected her father's attitude toward the people around him as she described what she considered a "narcissistic mentality.” Arguing that his longstanding status as the family's most prominent figure made it difficult for others to challenge his decisions, she also claimed that his reluctance to establish boundaries contributed to disagreements between his relatives and romantic partners. "But now I feel like he has more of a crab in a barrel mentality,” Ayisha added. “Whereas he doesn't want anyone to be bigger than him, you know? He doesn't have boundaries. He doesn't have just lines that shouldn't be crossed." Dominique remains one of the most recognizable players in Hawks history, having built a Hall of Fame career around his explosive scoring and spectacular athleticism. His son Jacob Wilkins is now pursuing a basketball career of his own after transferring from the University of Georgia to the California Golden Bears in 2026.
