Former NBA star J.R. Smith was arrested Monday in Texas on a charge of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence, according to Hunt County jail records and police statements.

The 41-year-old former New York Knicks guard was booked into the Hunt County Detention Center, and records showed Tuesday that he remained in custody with no bond set.

Smith was arrested in Royse City, roughly 30 miles northeast of Dallas, after police identified an active warrant issued by the Southlake Police Department.

According to Royse City police, an automated license plate reader alerted officers to Smith's vehicle while it was traveling along Interstate 30. Officers then identified Smith, whose full name is Earl Joseph Smith III, confirmed the warrant and took him into custody.

Smith's brother was reportedly in the vehicle when the arrest took place. Police released the vehicle to his brother after taking Smith into custody.

Authorities haven't publicly identified the alleged victim or provided details about what led to the warrant. Southlake police have described the matter as an ongoing investigation, and Smith's representatives haven't publicly commented on the case.

Smith's NBA career and life after basketball

Smith entered the NBA directly from high school in 2004 after being selected by the New Orleans Hornets. Over a 16-year career, he also played for the Denver Nuggets, Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 12.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists across 977 regular-season games.

His most notable years came with New York and Cleveland. Smith won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award in 2013 while playing for the Knicks.

Three years later, he helped LeBron James and the Cavaliers win the 2016 NBA championship, giving Cleveland its first NBA title. He later won another championship with the Lakers in 2020. His final NBA appearance came during that year's Finals against the Miami Heat.

Following his basketball career, Smith took an unconventional route into higher education and golf. He enrolled at North Carolina A&T in 2021 and joined the school's men's golf program as a walk-on. In May 2026, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies with a concentration in applied cultural thought.

Smith has also continued competing in golf after basketball, including amateur events and other competitions. His recent arrest now adds a new legal development to his post-NBA life, although authorities haven't released further details about the allegations.

Further information is expected as the investigation and court proceedings continue.
