Giannis Antetokounmpo reveals the one thing young players should ask NBA stars for
The anecdote reveals the thinking behind the superstar's message

Giannis Antetokounmpo is happy to take pictures with young fans, but the Miami Heat star wants them to leave with something more valuable than a selfie: knowledge. At a recent Nike Freak 8 event for young basketball players, Antetokounmpo opened the floor for questions. When some youngsters asked for pictures instead of advice, the two-time NBA MVP stopped the moment to offer a reality check.
"We took a picture, bro," Antetokounmpo said. "You got to ask for knowledge. That's the most important thing." The Greek Freak encouraged the aspiring players to ask about the realities of reaching the NBA, from building relationships with teammates and coaches to handling pressure, fame and distractions.
"How do you deal with 20,000 fans? How do you deal with pressure? How do you deal with the fame? How do you deal with distractions?" he asked. He also urged them to think about basketball beyond the highlights: What goes through a player's mind in the post? When should he shoot, and when is making the extra pass the smarter decision?
The Kobe Bryant lesson that stayed with Giannis
For Antetokounmpo , those are the kinds of questions that can help young athletes understand what separates talented players from professionals. Giannis backed up his advice with a personal story about meeting Kobe Bryant , one of his basketball idols.
"The only picture I got is with Kobe Bryant," he said. "But when I went there, I had a notebook, and I asked him, like, 50 questions." The notebook remains in his house, and he still consults it when he needs guidance. "Whenever I get confused, whenever I don't have the answer, I go back to that notebook," Antetokounmpo explained.
The anecdote reveals the thinking behind his message. Meeting Bryant was not simply a chance to take a photograph with a legend; it was an opportunity to learn from someone who had already reached the heights Antetokounmpo hoped to achieve.
That approach helped shape a career that began when the Milwaukee Bucks selected him 15th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft . He went on to win consecutive MVP awards in 2019 and 2020 before leading Milwaukee to the 2021 NBA championship, scoring 50 points in the title-clinching Game 6 against Phoenix.
His rise required years of development, adjustments and an ongoing willingness to improve. Those experiences are precisely what he wants young players to explore when they meet someone who has reached the highest level of the sport.
Antetokounmpo now faces a new challenge after joining the Miami Heat in a blockbuster summer trade that ended his long tenure with Milwaukee. The move brings fresh expectations, new teammates and the challenge of adapting to another organization.
Even an established superstar must find ways to improve and adjust, making the principles he shared with the youngsters relevant to his own next chapter. Miami is scheduled to open its regular season on October 21 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
For the aspiring players at the Nike event, Antetokounmpo's message extended beyond basketball. Social media can make a photograph with a celebrity feel like the ultimate prize, but access to someone's experience can offer a different kind of value.
