The Cleveland Cavaliers spent much of the summer trying to create enough room to improve without breaking apart the core that carried them deep into the postseason. Their biggest piece of business is now complete.

James Harden has agreed to a three-year, $97 million contract with Cleveland, according to ESPN, one day after the Cavaliers reportedly completed a sign-and-trade for Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets .

The agreement includes a player option for the 2028-29 season and a 15% trade kicker, giving Harden long-term security while helping Cleveland avoid the kind of second-apron restrictions that could have limited its ability to keep reshaping the roster.

That balance was central to the deal. Harden declined a $42.3 million player option earlier in the offseason, allowing the Cavaliers to lower his immediate cap number and spread more guaranteed money across multiple seasons.

Harden contract gave Cleveland room

Cleveland ’s offseason was shaped by the need to stay competitive while preserving maneuverability.

The Cavaliers had been projected to operate above the second apron, a position that would have made trades and other roster moves more difficult. Harden’s decision to opt out helped create enough flexibility for the front office to continue making changes.

The team also moved Max Strus and Dennis Schroder before adding Watson , then finalized the new contract with Harden . Cleveland acquired the former MVP at the February trade deadline, sending Darius Garland and a 2026 second-round pick to the LA Clippers .

The gamble worked well enough to convince the franchise to keep going.

In 26 regular-season games with the Cavaliers, Harden averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.7 assists while shooting 46.6% from the field and 43.5% from 3-point range.

Alongside Donovan Mitchell , he helped Cleveland reach the Eastern Conference Finals before the New York Knicks swept the series and later won the 2026 NBA title.

Harden now in elite financial territory

The contract is also significant beyond Cleveland’s cap sheet. Harden ’s career earnings are now set to pass $500 million, putting him alongside LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry as the only players to reach that mark.

He turns 37 on August 26 and is also set to become just the second player after LeBron to sign a contract worth more than $90 million in guaranteed salary at age 37 or older.

The Cavaliers are clearly betting that there is still enough high-level basketball left.

Harden may no longer be the overwhelming scorer who defined his years with the Houston Rockets , but Cleveland values his playmaking, shooting and ability to share control of the offense with Mitchell .

His new contract also keeps the franchise from having to choose between maintaining a contender and preserving flexibility. After adding Watson and securing Harden , Cleveland’s offseason direction is no longer difficult to read.

The Cavaliers believe their championship window is still open, and they are keeping Harden firmly inside it.
