Knicks’ greed sparks outrage and forces team to suspend ticket sales

The cheapest seat for the season opener surpassed $1,000

T he celebration of the New York Knicks’ first championship in 53 years quickly turned into outrage. Tickets for their October 20 season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers appeared at astonishing prices: the cheapest seat reached $1,251 and climbed as high as $1,408 during a presale.

The backlash forced Madison Square Garden Sports to temporarily suspend individual ticket sales. The organization acknowledged that an internal error had caused the increase and insisted it never intended to overcharge its fans.

The Knicks will return to last season’s prices and apply an average increase of 12%, the same hike established for season tickets. Anyone who already purchased tickets at the incorrect prices will receive a refund for the difference.

“We are pausing Knicks individual ticket sales due to a mistake in our pricing,” an MSG spokesperson said. “Our intention was never to overcharge our loyal fans, and we thank everyone for their support of the Knicks and their patience as we get this right.”

The error had pushed the average price for opening night to approximately $2,500. Demand is particularly high because the Knicks will raise their championship banner against a revamped 76ers team led by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey alongside new stars LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.

The organization will resume sales once the corrected prices become available. Although the mistake will be fixed, the 12% increase confirms that watching the champions at Madison Square Garden will remain considerably more expensive this season.
