Knicks star sparks war with Swifties by calling Taylor Swift "fake"
Tyler Kolek has questioned whether Taylor Swift genuinely supports the New York Knicks

T aylor Swift 's relationship with the New York Knicks has become an unexpected talking point after one of the team's own players questioned whether she deserves to be considered a genuine supporter.
Tyler Kolek has sparked a debate among basketball fans and Swifties after suggesting that the singer's appearances at Madison Square Garden are more about publicity than a genuine interest in the franchise.
His comments have also prompted a response from the Knicks , who have defended Swift's connection with the team.
The controversy began during an NBA 2K livestream on Thursday, November 5, when Kolek and teammate Deuce McBride were discussing the celebrities who regularly occupy courtside seats at Knicks games.
Rather than simply naming a famous face, Kolek questioned the motivations of some high-profile visitors, suggesting that being seen at the arena can be just as important as following the basketball.
He argued that certain celebrities attend because of the attention that comes with sitting courtside, rather than any particular attachment to the team.
When asked to identify the person he considered the least genuine, Swift became his unexpected choice.
“Maybe Taylor Swift ? I don't know if I've seen her at any other games,” Kolek said.
The guard's teammate appeared to support the assessment, although McBride quickly recognised that criticising the global superstar could create an uncomfortable situation.
“Swifties” were unlikely to appreciate the answer, he warned.
Kolek appeared aware of the potential backlash and attempted to acknowledge that Swift has a busy professional schedule. However, he did not completely withdraw his criticism, maintaining that her appearances seemed “a little performative.”
The comments quickly attracted attention online, with fans questioning whether Kolek had overlooked the singer's previous visits to the Garden.
The Knicks have a reason to defend Swift
One important detail in the discussion is that Swift's association with Madison Square Garden did not begin with the Knicks ' recent championship celebrations.
The singer has been photographed at the venue dating back to 2014 and 2015, long before Kolek joined the organisation. She has also spoken about her childhood memories of the Garden, explaining in a 2014 interview with Time that performing there as a young teenager gave her a lasting affection for the arena.
Her most recent high-profile appearance came during Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals, when she watched the Knicks take on the San Antonio Spurs alongside Este and Alana Haim and actress Mariska Hargitay .
Swift wore a specially designed orange-and-blue shirt reading “Stevie Knicks,” which quickly became a talking point among supporters.
The evening also delivered one of the most memorable moments in the franchise's recent history. New York overturned a 29-point deficit to beat San Antonio 107-106, helping the Knicks move closer to their first championship in 53 years.
The Knicks have since defended the singer's connection to the franchise, pointing to her longstanding relationship with Madison Square Garden and her previous appearances at games.
There is also an interesting complication involving Swift's husband, Travis Kelce . The couple attended an Eastern Conference Finals game in May, when Kelce was supporting the Cleveland Cavaliers. His Ohio connections meant that the two were not necessarily backing the same team that evening.
Kolek and McBride, meanwhile, highlighted Ben Stiller and Tracy Morgan as examples of celebrities they consider more established Knicks supporters. Both have become familiar faces at Madison Square Garden over the years.
This is not the first time Swift's presence at a Knicks game has generated controversy. ESPN analyst Monica McNutt previously questioned her allegiance during a hot-mic moment, prompting criticism from Swift's fans and eventually an apology.
For Kolek, the comments have created an unexpected distraction during the early part of the NBA season. For Swift, they have reopened a debate about whether celebrity supporters need to attend games regularly to prove their loyalty.
A representative for the singer was contacted for comment, but no response had been reported at the time of publication.
Ultimately, Swift's supporters can point to years of photographs and previous appearances as evidence that her connection to the Garden is not simply a product of the Knicks' latest success. Whether that is enough to convince Kolek is another matter.
