When LeBron James decided to continue his NBA career, few expected the next stop in his historic journey to be Philadelphia.

After eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers , the 41-year-old superstar chose the Philadelphia 76ers for his 24th season, prioritizing another championship opportunity over the comfort of staying in Los Angeles.

The move surprised many around the league, especially given the circumstances. James reportedly accepted a significant pay cut to join Philadelphia, leaving behind a franchise where he won a championship and became one of the biggest figures in team history.

Now, longtime agent Rich Paul has revealed what helped make the 76ers an attractive destination, pointing to a factor that went beyond contracts and roster construction: the way Philadelphia embraces its athletes.

“I think it was just about appreciation for him, you know? I think Philly is someone, it’s a place that appreciates their athletes, and you know, whenever he played here, even when he was on a different team, they always showed their appreciation for him,” Paul told reporter Jason Dumas.

Paul has strong personal connections to Philadelphia, dating back to his relationship with Mitchell & Ness , the city-based sports apparel brand. However, he made it clear that his history with the area didn't influence LeBron James ’ decision.

“And you know, it was his choice, and I wasn’t, you know, pushing him one way or the other,” Paul added.

Instead, Paul explained that the overall situation in Philadelphia helped convince James that the move made sense. The presence of Joel Embiid , Tyrese Maxey , and the direction of the organization all played important roles.

“Obviously, Tyrese being here, Joel, some of the moves being made, you know, how the organization is positioned, whenever he’s making a decision, you gotta look at everything from the top down,” Paul said.

One more title chase over retirement

The decision came after LeBron James seriously considered whether his career was coming to an end. After another long NBA season, retirement became a possibility before the four-time champion decided he still had more to give.

James made it clear his motivation wasn't financial. He wanted another chance to compete at the highest level.

“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team, and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” James said.

The opportunity wasn't always obvious. Paul previously admitted that Philadelphia wasn't viewed as a realistic landing spot before talks developed.

“We never heard from the Sixers because the Sixers never really thought there was even a chance,” Paul said. “No, we never even thought there was a chance.”

LeBron can solve Sixers’ biggest challenge

The next challenge will be making Philadelphia’s collection of stars work. The 76ers now feature James, Embiid, Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and V.J. Edgecombe , creating one of the most talented groups in the NBA.

Former Lakers star Magic Johnson believes the answer lies in LeBron James ’ ability to bring teammates together.

“Well, it’s going to be easy when you’re a playmaker, you know. So he gets everybody involved in the game. He gets people easy buckets and shots,” Johnson said.

“And so when you think about Maxey and Embiid, all those guys, now Jaylen Brown. One thing that he knows how to do is also bring everybody together.”

That ability has been one of the defining traits of LeBron James ’ career. From Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami to Anthony Davis in Los Angeles, he has repeatedly adapted his game alongside elite talent.

Philadelphia is asking him to do it again. According to Rich Paul , the city’s respect for its athletes may be the foundation that helps this unexpected partnership succeed.
