LeBron James viral Drew League video resurfaces showing what happened after cocky opponent tried to provoke him
LeBron looked almost too relaxed. Then another player decided to test him
A video from LeBron James' unforgettable 2022 appearance at the Drew League has resurfaced on social media, and years later, the sequence still tells a pretty entertaining story. The clip begins with LeBron calmly controlling the basketball before an opposing player suddenly reaches in and knocks it away, sending it out of bounds. Nothing particularly unusual there. What happens seconds later is what changes the mood.
As the players move back into position, the opponent walks directly past James and appears to brush him chest-to-chest, lingering just enough to make the moment feel like a challenge. LeBron watches him go by and pulls a hilarious face, almost as if he can't quite believe what just happened. Then he nods his head, adjusts the drawstring on his shorts and gets serious.
LeBron James appeared to flip the switch
From there, the resurfaced video becomes essentially a LeBron James highlight reel. He attacks the basket, spins around defenders, powers his way inside, throws down dunks and creates for his teammates. One play follows another, each making that earlier bit of swagger from his opponent look a little less wise.
James really did dominate that afternoon. Playing alongside DeMar DeRozan for the MMV Cheaters on July 16, 2022, LeBron erupted for 42 points, 16 rebounds and four steals in a 104-102 victory over Black Pearl Elite. It was his first Drew League appearance since 2011, and roughly 2,500 people packed into King/Drew Magnet High School to watch him put on the show.
James was 37 at the time, but there was little about his performance that suggested it. His afternoon included one-handed dunks, fadeaways, pull-up threes, a reverse finish off a spin and a thunderous alley-oop off the backboard. Even the NBA later collected the performance among the memorable highlights from his Drew League return.
Maybe the opposing player was simply competing. Perhaps that brief chest-to-chest brush meant nothing more than the usual swagger of a basketball game. But the way the resurfaced video is edited makes the sequence irresistible: LeBron gets challenged, gives him that look and goes to work. Sometimes it’s better not to provoke the King.
