Luka Doncic surprises new mom who named her baby Luka in heartwarming Kobe Day moment

The Lakers star returned home to Slovenia to visit newborns and children before an unexpected encounter brought his own story full circle

Luka Doncic walked into a maternity ward in his native Slovenia expecting to surprise new parents. Instead, one mother had a surprise waiting for him: she had just named her newborn baby Luka.

The Los Angeles Lakers star smiled as he met the mother and her tiny son during a special visit to University Medical Center Ljubljana, handing over a Lakers welcome package for the newborn. It was a simple interaction, but one that quickly became one of the sweetest moments of a day dedicated to remembering Kobe Bryant.

Luka Doncic brings Kobe Day home to Slovenia

The visit took place as part of the Lakers' Kobe Day tradition with UCLA Health, celebrated on August 24 in honor of the Nos. 8 and 24 Bryant wore during his legendary career. This year, the initiative traveled to Doncic's home country, where Luka and his Lakers teammates spent time with newborns, young patients and their families.

For the children, however, there was little doubt about who the biggest attraction was. Austin Reaves joked about the reception his teammate received in his own country: "They love Luka more, as they should. Luka is a hero!" For Doncic, it was a chance to return some of that affection to the city where his own story began.

While walking through the hospital, Doncic reunited with Branko Cvjetićanin, the obstetrician who was present when Luka himself was born in Ljubljana more than 27 years ago.

The basketball superstar who had returned home to welcome a new generation of Slovenian babies suddenly found himself face-to-face with someone who had been there at the very beginning of his own life.

On a day created to preserve Kobe Bryant's legacy, the moment carried an unexpectedly personal meaning. Doncic came home to make children smile, met a newborn already carrying his name and ended up reconnecting with the doctor who was there when the original Luka first entered the world.
