NBA Season 2026 Key dates: Opening Night, NBA Cup and every date that you must add to your calendar

Basketball fans will soon have plenty of reasons to clear their calendars as the 2026-27 NBA season gets underway.

From the first games in October to the postseason battles in the spring, the league has confirmed a schedule filled with major matchups, holiday showcases and important milestones.

The regular season begins on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with three games scheduled for Opening Night. The Boston Celtics visit the Detroit Pistons at 3 p.m. ET, followed by the Philadelphia 76ers facing the New York Knicks at 7 p.m. ET.

The Oklahoma City Thunder then take on the San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 p.m. ET. All three games will be shown on NBC and Peacock.

The opening night will offer an early look at several teams hoping to make a statement in the new campaign.

The Knicks will also have the opportunity to celebrate their championship success as they begin another season, while Philadelphia's matchup will feature LeBron James ' new chapter with the 76ers in the spotlight.

However, Opening Night is only the beginning. The schedule includes the NBA's in-season tournament, a five-game Christmas Day slate, international matchups and the traditional late-season push for playoff positioning.

The NBA Cup, Christmas Day and the season's biggest dates

One of the first major events after the regular season begins is the Emirates NBA Cup. Group Play starts on Friday, October 30, with games scheduled on Fridays through November 27, alongside additional matchups on November 24 and 25.

The competition gives teams another trophy to pursue while adding significance to early-season games.

The knockout stage begins with the quarterfinals on December 4 and 5. The semifinals are scheduled for December 8 and/or 9, before the championship game takes place on Friday, December 11, at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The NBA Cup's remaining schedule also affects the regular-season calendar, with two games for each team to be assigned according to the results of Group Play.

Christmas Day remains another major fixture on the NBA calendar. Five games will be played on December 25, continuing the league's tradition of showcasing some of its biggest stars and rivalries during the holiday period.

The San Antonio Spurs face the New York Knicks at noon ET in a rematch of the 2026 NBA Finals. The Miami Heat then visit the Boston Celtics at 2:30 p.m. ET, followed by the 76ers against the Los Angeles Lakers at 5 p.m. ET.

The Oklahoma City Thunder travel to Minnesota to face the Timberwolves at 8 p.m. ET, while the Denver Nuggets meet the Golden State Warriors at 10:30 p.m. ET. All five games will air on ABC and ESPN.

The 76ers-Lakers matchup will be particularly notable as James returns to Los Angeles following his move to Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Knicks-Spurs game offers an early Christmas reminder of the previous season's championship contest.

International games bring the NBA to Europe

The NBA's international schedule also includes two games in Europe. On January 14, 2027, the Spurs face the New Orleans Pelicans at Accor Arena in Paris.

The same teams meet again on January 17 at Co-op Live in Manchester, England. Both games will be available on Prime Video.

The European fixtures give fans outside North America an opportunity to watch NBA action in person while providing the league with another chance to grow its international audience.

The trade deadline on February 11 could prove particularly important for teams looking to strengthen their rosters before the postseason. All-Star Weekend, meanwhile, will bring the league's leading players together in Phoenix from February 19 to 21.

The regular-season finale on April 11 will be followed quickly by the Play-In Tournament, scheduled for April 13-16. Teams fighting for the final postseason places will have little time to recover before the pressure intensifies.

The playoffs begin on April 17, marking the start of the road toward the 2027 NBA Finals, which are expected to take place in June.
