Newly released police bodycam footage shows an unusual conversation between former NBA player J.R. Smith and police officers in Royse City, Texas, during a September 2026 traffic stop.

While checking an outstanding warrant, officers began discussing Smith's NBA career and his two championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers. After Smith mentioned winning alongside Kyrie Irving and LeBron James, one officer, apparently a Dallas Mavericks supporter, expressed his frustration over the February 2025 trade that sent Luka Dončić from Dallas to Los Angeles.

The officer blamed James for the trade and said he was still upset about losing Dončić. However, James has previously denied having any involvement in the transaction.

Moments later, officers confirmed the warrant and arrested Smith in connection with an alleged September 18 domestic assault involving a woman. Smith was subsequently released, and his attorney emphasized that he is presumed innocent.

The bodycam footage was publicized on November 3, 2026, drawing attention to the unexpected basketball discussion immediately before Smith's arrest.
