No retired jersey or statue: Why LeBron's decision to go to Philadelphia would have destroyed his legacy with the Lakers

LeBron’s eight-year Lakers run produced a championship and historic milestones, but his exit has sparked a new debate

LeBron James’ decision to continue his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers has added another layer to the long-running debate surrounding his Los Angeles Lakers legacy.

After eight seasons in purple and gold, James chose to leave the franchise and sign with Philadelphia on a two-year, $8 million deal. The move came after he seriously considered retirement following the 2025-26 season.

There’s no question that James left Los Angeles with a remarkable résumé. He led the Lakers to their 17th NBA championship in 2020, winning Finals MVP in the process, while also breaking the league’s all-time scoring record in a Lakers uniform.

Across his eight seasons with the franchise, he established himself as one of the most accomplished players to ever wear the iconic jersey.

That, however, hasn’t stopped former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas from questioning whether James should receive the franchise’s ultimate honors.

In 2024, Arenas confidently predicted that James would eventually receive a statue outside the Lakers’ home arena. His reasoning was that the NBA’s all-time leading scorer had accomplished enough in Los Angeles that the franchise couldn’t realistically leave him out.

Now, Arenas has seemingly reversed course. Discussing James ’ move to Philadelphia on “Gil’s Arena,” he argued that the superstar should’ve simply retired as a Laker instead of continuing his career elsewhere.

“I can tell you right now, if they going to ask me if he should get a trophy [statue]… f*** no. He didn’t retire here,” said Arenas . “Have Philly build you one of them small little a**, little a** small ones.”

Why leaving Los Angeles matters to Arenas

Arenas ’ argument stems from the Lakers’ particularly demanding standard for permanent recognition. The franchise has traditionally reserved its highest honors for players whose careers became deeply connected to the organization.

That’s why the distinction between finishing in Los Angeles and finishing somewhere else matters so much to Arenas . When Nick Young pointed out that Shaquille O’Neal also ended his career away from the Lakers despite eventually receiving a statue, Arenas countered by emphasizing O’Neal’s three championships with Los Angeles.

James ’ Philadelphia move now gives him an opportunity to add another chapter to his career. He’ll join a Sixers group featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe , creating a veteran presence alongside a talented core.

Maxey has also spoken positively about his relationship with James . The young guard has worked out with James before becoming his teammate, and their existing familiarity could help make the transition easier.

Still, the Philadelphia chapter doesn’t change what James accomplished in Los Angeles. The Lakers’ 2020 title, his scoring record and eight-year tenure remain firmly part of franchise history.

Whether those achievements ultimately lead to a retired jersey or a statue is a decision the Lakers will make themselves.
