Steph Curry walks out of Media Day presser: ‘That’s how bad it is?’

Curry stunned by suggestion that playoffs are now a lofty goal

Stephen Curry wasn’t exactly ready to accept the idea that the Golden State Warriors have already been written off ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.

During Monday’s Media Day, Curry reacted with disbelief when he was asked about the lack of expectations surrounding Golden State.

After a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, the Warriors enter the new season with plenty of questions, and many outside observers aren’t expecting them to contend for a deep playoff run.

Curry , however, appeared genuinely stunned by the suggestion that making the postseason has become an ambitious target for his team.

“That’s how bad it is? To make the playoffs?” Curry asked. He then appeared to reflect on how quickly perceptions of the Warriors had changed.

“I went from championship to—”

Before the thought could be completed, Curry responded emphatically to the situation.

“That’s what I think about that! Damn! Damnnnn!”

He then stood up and walked away from the podium, ending his media availability in dramatic fashion. Curry later made it clear that his frustration wasn’t directed at the reporter who asked the question.

“Sorry, that wasn’t to you,” Curry explained. “That was to the situation.”

The exchange offered a glimpse into Curry’s mindset as he prepares for his 18th NBA season. The Warriors still have a veteran core led by their longtime superstar, but their recent struggles have caused expectations to fall considerably compared with the standards established during their championship years.

Earlier in the day, head coach Steve Kerr said he welcomed the skepticism surrounding his team. Curry’s response suggested he views those doubts somewhat differently.

Porzingis setback adds to Warriors’ concerns

Golden State also received some concerning news on Media Day involving Kristaps Porzingis. General manager Mike Dunleavy revealed that the veteran center will miss the beginning of training camp because of an unspecified health issue.

Porzingis won’t travel with the Warriors to Hawaii for training camp and is considered out indefinitely. However, Dunleavy stopped short of describing the issue as a long-term concern and said he hopes Porzingis can return soon.

“He was in last week, doing well and everything. I don't have a timeline on it,” Dunleavy said at media day Monday. “Hopefully he will be back soon.”

Steve Kerr called the development surprising, while Dunleavy stressed that the organization doesn’t want to overreact because the season is still some time away.

The situation is particularly notable because Porzingis missed significant time last season after joining Golden State at the February trade deadline. He played only 32 games overall, including 15 for the Warriors, while averaging 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 blocks.

The 7-foot-2 Latvian subsequently agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract with Golden State in June, signaling the organization’s belief that he can play an important role moving forward.

His availability could be an important storyline throughout training camp, especially for a Warriors team already facing questions about its ability to return to the postseason.

Curry’s Media Day reaction, meanwhile, showed that he isn’t approaching this season with lowered expectations.
