Stephen Curry breaks silence on secret attempt to recruit LeBron James
Stephen Curry finally revealed his role in trying to recruit LeBron James.

The Golden State Warriors had a clear target in free agency: LeBron James . The organization did everything it could to convince the four-time NBA champion to join forces with Stephen Curry , but the effort ultimately fell short. The veteran superstar instead signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
For weeks, rumors swirled about Curry’s role in the recruitment process. After all, the two have been the defining faces of the NBA for the better part of a decade. Despite the mutual respect between them, LeBron never ranked Golden State among his top options, prioritizing offers from Eastern Conference teams instead.
Now, for the first time since free agency concluded, Curry has broken his silence on the attempt to land James — and made it clear he never would have passed up the chance to try.
“If anybody didn’t [try to recruit him], I think they’d be a fool. It was a good time for the NBA — obviously with a guy of his stature, his notoriety, to be in that position where he got to choose where he wanted to go.”
With those words, the two-time MVP confirmed he played an active role in the recruitment. At the same time, he made clear that he fully respected James’s decision as the league’s all-time leading scorer.
The mission was always an uphill battle. With Jimmy Butler sidelined by injury, Curry is currently the only All-Star caliber player on the Warriors’ roster. Beyond him, Draymond Green — one of LeBron’s closest friends in the league — was the only other figure with enough influence to try to sway him.
In the end, neither Curry nor Green could convince James that Golden State’s current roster had what it took to contend for another championship.
The move LeBron was waiting for never came
Throughout free agency, reports indicated that James was open to considering either the Warriors or the Cleveland Cavaliers — but with one major condition: that one of the teams make a significant roster upgrade before he arrived.
Golden State chose to keep its core intact and attempted to recruit James without making a blockbuster trade.
One of the most frequently mentioned names was Anthony Davis , who would have formed a star trio alongside Curry and LeBron while reuniting James with his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate. The Washington Wizards, however, showed no interest in trading Davis before he even debuted with the franchise, effectively shutting the door on that possibility.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers stunned the league by acquiring Jaylen Brown in exchange for Paul George — a move that ultimately proved decisive in landing LeBron.
Brown arrives after the best season of his career and represented exactly the kind of high-impact addition James was looking for on a true title contender.
