The question of whether Stephen Curry could ever finish his career somewhere other than the Golden State Warriors has lingered around the NBA whenever the franchise has faced uncertainty.

According to Steve Kerr , Curry settled that question privately months ago.

“When we talked at the end of last year, I asked him if that was a consideration,” Kerr said. “First thing he said was, I’m not moving my family. My family is so important to me, and they’re happy here. And he said, I don’t want to go anywhere.”

Curry’s wife, Ayesha Curry , and their four children — Riley, Ryan, Canon and Caius — have built their lives in the Bay Area while he has spent his entire professional career with Golden State .

“And that’s a reflection of who he is as a father, as a human being,” Kerr added. “And he meant that for his own personal family and his Warriors family, too.”

Curry’s loyalty never in question

Curry has since reinforced that commitment by agreeing to a two-year extension reportedly worth $116 million, keeping him under contract through the 2028-29 season.

Kerr said the possibility of Curry leaving never felt particularly realistic to those around him.

“Honestly, the beauty of Steph is that there’s never been a moment where any of us thought he was leaving,” Kerr said. “I mean, he’s that locked in with his teammates, his coaches, management, his family. I can feel it. He doesn’t want to go anywhere else.”

The coach believes Curry also understands the significance of spending an entire career with one franchise.

“He’s going to be Kobe for the Lakers, Tim Duncan for the Spurs,” Kerr said. “Steph will always be the Warriors, and that’s pretty cool.”

Curry was drafted by Golden State in 2009 and has since won four championships and two MVP awards while becoming the defining player of the franchise’s most successful era.

Relationship with Kerr goes beyond winning

Kerr is entering his 13th season coaching Curry , and his admiration for the guard extends well beyond what he has accomplished on the court.

“I can’t even imagine a coach being luckier ever in the history of the game than I am to coach Steph Curry,” Kerr said. “Not just the player, but the human being. He brings light to every room that he’s in, even in the dark times.”

Curry has expressed a similar attachment to the Bay Area, describing it as home and making clear that finishing his career with the Warriors remains important to him.

That helps explain why Kerr ’s question about leaving produced such an immediate response. Curry ’s decision wasn't simply about staying with the organization that drafted him.

It was about protecting the life his family has built there, and keeping together both the family at home and the basketball family that has surrounded him for nearly two decades.
