Stephen Curry has made it clear that his unresolved contract situation won’t become a distraction for the Golden State Warriors as they prepare for another NBA season.

With training camp approaching, the franchise superstar remains eligible for a new extension, but he doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to finalize an agreement.

Curry’s message is simple as he thinks the focus should remain on basketball, not contract negotiations.

“I don’t want there to be no drama,” Curry told ESPN. “No talking points. This team should be competitive and go win.”

The contract situation is significant because Curry is eligible for a two-year extension worth as much as $136.7 million. Golden State has reportedly discussed several possibilities with its longtime star, including the maximum salary, a smaller deal that could provide the organization with additional financial flexibility, or waiting before reaching a decision.

Curry appears willing to take his time and consider the bigger picture. His next contract could have implications not only for his future but also for the Warriors’ ability to strengthen the roster around him.

“It's going to happen at the right time, once I have all the information I need to make the decision that is right,” Curry said.

“The team's been great having that conversation back and forth. If I don't sign, it won't affect me in terms of my play or carrying that weight. But I'll make the decision when I'm ready.”

Curry is balancing his future with Golden State’s flexibility

Golden State’s salary-cap situation could shift considerably depending on the size and length of Curry’s next deal. A maximum extension would give Curry significant financial security, while accepting less could leave the Warriors with more room to make moves around their veteran centerpiece.

That flexibility matters to Curry because he remains focused on competing. He has repeatedly indicated that his goal is to stay with Golden State for the remainder of his career, but he also wants the roster to have the resources needed to contend.

That mindset comes as Curry prepares for his 18th NBA season. The 38-year-old was limited to 43 games last season because of persistent right-knee pain and swelling. However, he has indicated that he feels ready physically and is looking forward to getting back on the court.

“I feel like there’s no hesitation about where I’m at physically going in,” Curry said.

The Warriors will therefore enter training camp with their biggest contract question still unanswered. However, Curry’s approach suggests the situation won’t dominate the team’s preparations.

With the veteran guard committed to maintaining his focus and the organization continuing discussions, there’s no immediate need for either side to force a resolution.
