The NBA is on alert over the potential move of Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson to the Miami Heat, with the Los Angeles Lakers also interested
The Heat reportedly have no interest in paying a steep price for the veteran sharpshooter

Klay Thompson’s future with the Dallas Mavericks has become one of the NBA’s more intriguing offseason storylines, with the Miami Heat reportedly maintaining strong interest while the Los Angeles Lakers could also enter the picture if the veteran guard eventually reaches the open market.
Thompson is entering the final season of the three-year contract he signed with Dallas in 2024. He’s set to earn approximately $17.5 million this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
The Mavericks have explored the trade market for the four-time NBA champion, but a deal hasn’t materialized, leaving his future uncertain.
Miami’s interest in Thompson is well established, but the Heat reportedly don’t want to sacrifice another important young asset to acquire him. Nikola Jovic has emerged as a key name in the speculation, yet Miami appears unwilling to include the 23-year-old forward in a trade.
That stance is understandable after the Heat already surrendered significant young talent and draft resources to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo. Miami sent Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and Kasparas Jakučionis to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of the blockbuster deal, leaving the franchise with fewer developmental pieces.
Miami’s patience could decide Thompson’s next destination
The Heat’s preferred route appears to be waiting for Thompson to become available rather than paying a substantial price to bring him to South Beach immediately. Miami reportedly believes Thompson could eventually join the team without requiring a trade, although that scenario depends heavily on Dallas changing its current position.
The Mavericks have little incentive to simply buy out Thompson . They’re reportedly focused on finding a trade that would return an asset, whether that’s a draft pick or another useful piece. That has created a stalemate between the two sides.
Thompson would still make plenty of sense for Miami from a basketball perspective. His experience, championship pedigree and ability to shoot from the perimeter could provide valuable spacing around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. He’s also comfortable playing without dominating the ball, which could make him an intriguing fit alongside two major offensive focal points.
There are concerns, however. Thompson averaged 11.7 points last season and shot 38.3% from three-point range, a career-low mark. At 36, Miami would have to determine whether his shooting and experience still outweigh the potential decline that comes with age.
The Lakers are another team to monitor. If Thompson reaches free agency, Los Angeles could pursue him without surrendering trade compensation to Dallas. Golden State could also become relevant, particularly given Thompson’s long history with the Warriors and Stephen Curry.
Dallas holds the leverage because Thompson remains under contract. Miami appears content to wait, while the Mavericks continue looking for value. Unless either side changes its position, Thompson’s situation could remain unresolved deep into the offseason.
The NBA will be watching closely, because the outcome could determine whether Thompson begins the next chapter of his career in Miami, Los Angeles or potentially somewhere else.
