"Trade Steph Curry now": Boogie Cousins highlights Steve Kerr's contradiction with the Warriors
Boogie Cousins believes the Warriors must either build around their franchise icon or trade him to a team with genuine championship ambitions

DeMarcus Cousins believes the Golden State Warriors need to make a decision about Stephen Curry’s future: build a genuine championship contender around him or allow the franchise legend to pursue another title elsewhere.
The former Warriors center made that argument during an appearance on Gil’s Arena, where he challenged Steve Kerr’s comments about the organization’s reluctance to sacrifice its long-term assets.
Cousins questioned how Golden State could acknowledge Curry’s remaining championship window while refusing to make the major roster investments necessary to compete.
His argument came after Curry delivered another outstanding performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors superstar finished with 44 points in a 119-114 victory, collecting eight rebounds and six assists.
He also made all 16 of his free throws, extending his perfect start at the line to 39 consecutive successful attempts.
That performance showed Cousins why Curry shouldn't be treated as someone whose championship opportunities have already passed.
“He’s still great. Steph had 44 last night,” said Cousins . “The hardest part of the league is finding a foundational piece…”
Gilbert Arenas offered a different perspective during the discussion, suggesting that a 38-year-old superstar isn't necessarily someone a front office can build a five-year strategy around.
Cousins says Warriors must make a decision on Curry
Cousins argued that Golden State cannot acknowledge Curry's championship potential and refuse to sacrifice future draft assets to improve the supporting cast.
If the organization doesn't believe it can realistically compete for another championship during Curry's remaining years, Cousins suggested trading him to a legitimate contender would be the more appropriate decision.
“They should just trade him then. You can’t say Steph still has a championship window, but then say in the same breath, ‘I’m not willing to give up the future for him.’ So it’s either you have a window, or you don’t. Or if you don’t feel like you do, let him go be great somewhere else,” said Cousins .
The disagreement stems from an interview Kerr gave to The Ringer's Logan Murdock. The Warriors coach defended general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and owner Joe Lacob's cautious approach, questioning whether sacrificing a significant collection of future first-round picks made sense when building around a player approaching 39.
Kerr also pointed toward Golden State's previous acquisition of Jimmy Butler as evidence that the franchise had already made meaningful efforts to strengthen Curry's supporting cast. Nevertheless, he maintained that protecting future assets and preserving financial flexibility remained important considerations.
Wednesday's victory provided another example of Curry's importance. Golden State initially established a commanding 24-point advantage before Minnesota mounted a fourth-quarter comeback.
The Timberwolves eventually reduced the deficit to four, but Curry's scoring and perfect free-throw shooting helped the Warriors survive the late pressure.
Golden State improved to 2-3 following its second consecutive victory, although the team's defensive execution and ability to protect leads remain concerns.
