Bulls legend Ron Harper lashes out at Caitlin Clark's toxic fans over false claim about Michael Jordan

The five-time NBA champion said he respects Clark’s game but took issue with parts of her online following

The latest argument started after the Indiana Fever were knocked out of the playoffs by the Las Vegas Aces , prompting some of Caitlin Clark ’s most vocal supporters to say they would stop watching the WNBA postseason.

The discussion escalated when one fan tried to shut down criticism of Clark by claiming Michael Jordan had publicly called her his favorite WNBA player. The post still spread widely, and former Chicago Bulls guard Ron Harper eventually responded.

“Everyone can have a opinion right or wrong I respect her game but not het followers,” Harper wrote.

His response was less an attack on Clark than a criticism of the way some of the debate around her has developed.

Line between Clark and her fan base

Harper made clear that he respects Clark as a player, but his frustration was directed at sections of her following and the tone of the online arguments surrounding her. The false Jordan claim only made the situation worse.

Other users quickly pushed back on the post, pointing out that there is no verified interview or quote in which Jordan names Clark as his favorite WNBA player. The claim appears to have come from social-media content using unrelated Jordan footage and text overlays.

The timing also helped fuel the reaction. Clark ’s season had just ended, and the loss triggered renewed discussion about how quickly she should be judged in the postseason. Veteran analyst Linda Cohn pushed back on that rush by invoking Jordan ’s own career path.

“Michael Jordan, you might have heard of him. He played, I believe, over 500 games before winning his first championship,” Cohn said. “So, can we lay off the ‘What’s wrong with her,’ and ‘She’s not great until she wins her first championship’ narrative?”

Clark remains WNBA’s biggest television draw

The debate over her fans should not obscure the scale of Clark ’s impact. The WNBA said its first round was the most-watched in league history, averaging 1.3 million viewers, a 37% increase from the previous year.

Indiana’s three first-round games averaged 1.93 million viewers, compared with 985,000 for games without the Fever . Those numbers explain why arguments involving Clark tend to grow so quickly.

She drives ratings, attention and conversation in a way few players in the league can match. Harper ’s message was that none of that requires fabricated endorsements or hostile behavior from fans.

The Jordan claim was false. The larger debate around Clark ’s influence, however, is very real, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to separate the player from the noise surrounding her.
