The 30th WNBA regular season is about to finish with the last games taking place next Thursday, September 24th, to give way to the playoffs with the first round commencing on September 27th.

With around three games remaining for each squad, the primary focus during these closing days centers on finalizing the exact playoff seeding, as the eight postseason participants were officially locked in weeks ago (Lynx, Valkyries, Aces, Dream, Fever, Liberty, Wings, Mystics).

Caitlin Clark Fuels MVP Buzz With Historic Playmaking

Beyond the shifting standings, the other critical storyline centers around the major annual awards: for MVP, four-time winner and current scoring leader A'ja Wilson stands as the favorite over Indiana Fever stars Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell .

For Clark, this campaign has been a triumphant redemption arc after playing just 13 games last year, bouncing back with historic numbers that would undoubtedly capture MVP honors in any normal year were it not for Wilson's sheer two-way dominance.

Clark currently stands as the only player in the top 3 in both points and assists per game, averaging 22.6 PPG (No. 3 in the WNBA) and an elite 8.5 APG (No. 1 in the league).

Furthermore, during a recent outing, she notched her 10th game of the season with 25+ points and 10+ assists , setting an unmatched benchmark higher than any player has achieved in league history. Delivering the most offensively productive season the association has ever witnessed across combined scoring and distribution, Clark's historic resume makes a powerful statement.

Fever Dynamic Duo as Postseason Nears

Illuminating that explosive capability during their 103-85 victory over the Toronto Tempo, Clark orchestrated a masterclass with 28 points (anchored by a 12-of-12 mark from the free-throw line ) alongside a season-high 14 assists, while fellow MVP contender Kelsey Mitchell erupted for 33 points (including 7-of-11 from beyond the arc).

That performance extended their combined WNBA single-season record to 20 games scoring 20+ points each . If the dynamic backcourt stays healthy, opponents face a nightmare matchup come playoff time, especially with the Fever averaging a blistering 97.1 points per game , the highest offensive average the league has ever recorded.

Indiana still holds a path to secure the third seed in the standings, playing their final stretch with home games against Washington and Minnesota before closing out the regular season on the road against Minnesota.
