Caitlin Clark makes history in her World Cup debut leading Team USA with a performance no one has matched
Clark was named Player of the Game following the 94–61 victory over China

The FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin has officially tipped off with a busy opening matchday featuring 16 countries competing for a spot in the grand final on Sunday, September 13th .
Held every four years, the tournament has been completely dominated by the United States , which has captured gold in every single edition since 1998 , aside from a bronze finish in 2006, making them heavy favorites to secure their fifth consecutive world title .
Right out of the gate on opening day, basketball powerhouses like Spain , France , and the United States established immediate authority by winning their respective contests by 30 or more points.
France secured the largest blowout with a resounding 99-53 victory over Hungary, while Team USA cruised past China 94-61, propelled by a stellar performance from Caitlin Clark , who electrified the floor off the bench to earn Player of the Game honors.

Despite not cracking the starting lineup, Clark dominated the hardwood by logging a team-high 25 minutes , dropping a game-best 14 points (tied with Paige Bueckers ), and dishing out 11 assists .
Clark's inaugural World Cup appearance etched her name into the tournament record books because her 11 dimes not only set a new Team USA single-game record for a player making their debut, but she also became the first player in event history to record 10+ assists with zero turnovers .
Furthermore, she achieved a milestone no American player had touched in nearly three decades, becoming the first representative from the USA to rack up at least 10 assists in a World Cup game since current South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley handed out 12 assists during the gold-medal final against Russia back in 1998.
Staley eventually finished that 1998 tournament with a U.S. record 52 total assists , and if Team USA marches all the way to the final and Clark maintains her blistering distribution pace, she has a legitimate shot at threatening that long-standing benchmark.
Looking ahead, the road continues this Sunday when Team USA squares off against Italy , a squad fresh off defeating Czechia in their opening fixture. Following the Italian matchup, the Americans will wrap up Group D play on Monday against Czechia .
Securing victories in both contests will punch Team USA's ticket straight into the quarterfinals, though finishing second or third in the group stage would force them into an additional qualification playoff match before reaching the final eight.
