Caitlin Clark’s Nike Caitlin 1 sold out in minutes, but took more than two years to create

Behind the Caitlin 1 launch were more than two years of work, carefully crafted details and a team fans rarely get to see

C aitlin Clark’s first signature Nike shoe sold out in minutes , according to a behind-the-scenes post celebrating its release. But the detail that makes the story more interesting is how long it took to reach that moment: more than two years, countless hours and even design work done on a plane using a laptop trackpad.

Its author describes the care poured into every “CC” and every “22,” right down to the edges. Nike’s campaign says “Nothing Special To See Here.” The post offers a different perspective: there was something special in the work fans never saw.

Two years of work behind a $140 shoe

Released October 1, the adult Caitlin 1 retails for $140 . It features Clark’s initials and jersey number, an Opticast upper designed to support quick lateral movement, a forefoot Air Zoom Turbo unit and full-length Cushlon cushioning. The launch included the blue “Caitlin Blue” and yellow “Warning Code” editions.

Clark’s Indiana Fever teammates were among the first to receive the Caitlin 1 before its public release. Their excited reactions gave Nike the kind of endorsement an ad tries to capture: players celebrating a teammate’s achievement and immediately checking out her shoes. Lexie Hull even wore her blue pair to practice. The delivery made the launch feel personal before fans could buy a pair.

The gifts also reached Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who received the red-and-gold “Sea of Red” edition inspired by Clark’s longtime support for the team. His smiling reaction added another familiar face to the rollout, followed by Travis and Jason Kelce showing off their own pairs. Each delivery connected the shoe to people and teams that matter to Clark.

The design starts with how she plays: creating space, stopping hard and moving quickly into a shot. Drawing on her experience wearing Kobe models, the Caitlin 1 combines a forefoot Air Zoom Turbo unit with full-length Cushlon foam for responsive cushioning and court feel.

Its Opticast upper uses molded polyurethane nodes of varying heights, with a raised wave structure near the forefoot designed to support lateral cuts and step-backs.

The personal details are built into that construction. Raised “C” and “2” patterns reference her initials and No. 22 , while a semi-translucent Swoosh overlaps another to form two “C” shapes a design Nike says went through more than 300 versions.

The blue and yellow launch editions reinforce that theme of duality. Underneath, “Shoot More Threes” and “This was never a long shot” give the shoe two final messages rooted in Clark’s confidence.
