Paige Bueckers breaks her fans' hearts: the Dallas star breaks down after losing to the Valkyries
Paige Bueckers struggled to contain her emotions after the Dallas Wings' season ended with a 77-73 loss to the Golden State Valkyries despite a 16-point lead

P aige Bueckers ' second WNBA season ended in heartbreaking fashion, and the Dallas Wings star struggled to hide her emotions after the team's playoff elimination Friday night.
Dallas was within touching distance of the WNBA semifinals after building a 16-point advantage against the Golden State Valkyries in Game 3 of their first-round series.
Instead, the Wings watched that lead disappear as Golden State completed a dramatic comeback and secured a 77-73 victory.
The result ended Dallas ' season and sent the Valkyries into the semifinals, where they will face the Las Vegas Aces . For Bueckers , the defeat was particularly difficult after she had helped establish Dallas as a playoff team during her second professional campaign.
Bueckers was visibly emotional during her postgame press conference. The 25-year-old guard had just played 38 minutes in an elimination game and finished with 17 points, six assists, two steals and two blocks.
However, she struggled to find her shooting rhythm, going 3-for-14 from the field and 1-for-4 from three-point range.
She also went scoreless in the fourth quarter as Golden State 's defense increasingly made it difficult for her to create clean opportunities.
The Valkyries used several defenders to make Bueckers work throughout the deciding game.
Kaila Charles, Tiffany Hayes and Gabby Williams were among those involved in limiting Dallas' leading scorer, with the defensive pressure becoming increasingly important as Golden State erased the Wings' advantage.
Dallas entered halftime with a 44-37 lead and then appeared to take control when the margin grew to 53-37 early in the third quarter. But the Valkyries gradually chipped away at the deficit.
Golden State eventually tied the contest at 65 before taking control in the closing minutes. Gabby Williams became particularly influential down the stretch, while the Valkyries' defense prevented Dallas from finding the offensive consistency it needed.
Bueckers' playoff disappointment does not erase her season
Arike Ogunbowale gave Dallas everything she had in the elimination game, scoring 30 points and grabbing five rebounds. But the Wings could not convert their advantage into a series victory.
For Bueckers , the final two games of the series represented a difficult contrast with the beginning of her postseason. She opened the playoffs with 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting in Game 1, showing why she had become such a central part of Dallas' future.
The Valkyries adjusted defensively afterward, holding her to 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting in Game 2 before Friday's 17-point performance.
That late-series struggle, however, came after a regular season in which Bueckers took another major step forward.
She averaged 20.9 points, 5.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 51.2% from the field, 41% from three-point range and 87.1% from the free-throw line. The WNBA's official player profile confirms those numbers for her 2026 campaign.
Those statistics followed an impressive rookie year in which Bueckers won Rookie of the Year and earned All-WNBA Second Team honors. She was also selected to the All-Star team during her first professional season.
Dallas head coach Jose Fernandez defended Bueckers after the elimination, emphasizing how much responsibility she carried during the season.
"Paige is taking it hard," Fernandez said after Game 3. "She carries that load. She's a winner. This series shouldn't have any inkling on the kind of season she had for us. We don't get to this point without Paige. She takes a lot of ownership and carries a heavy load. The great ones do."
The Wings' elimination also marks the end of Bueckers ' first WNBA playoff series. While the conclusion was painful, Dallas' postseason appearance represented another step in the development of a young franchise built around its No. 1 overall pick from the 2025 draft.
For now, Bueckers and the Wings are left to reflect on a series that slipped away after they had Golden State on the ropes.
The Valkyries move forward to face Las Vegas, while Bueckers enters the offseason after another statistically significant season, one that ended with disappointment, but also reinforced her importance to Dallas' long-term ambitions.
