Sophie Cunningham finds out what the Indiana Fever GM said about her future in Indiana

Like Kelsey Mitchell, Cunningham will be a free agent and may leave the Indiana Fever

The 30th WNBA semifinals are set, with one series between the Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty and the other pitting the Golden State Valkyries against the reigning champions, the Las Vegas Aces .

The Aces advanced after eliminating the Indiana Fever for a second straight season in an elimination game, and they are now chasing a fourth title in five seasons with future five-time MVP A’ja Wilson leading the way.

For teams like the Dallas Wings and Indiana Fever, the offseason starts now. Both clubs have young franchise pieces, Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers , with the talent to win if the roster around them keeps improving.

Fever GM Amber Cox addresses Cunningham’s free agency future

Indiana Fever general manager Amber Cox was direct when asked whether Sophie Cunningham’s off-court profile would shape how the franchise handles her free agency.

Cunningham is set to hit the open market this winter after two seasons in Indianapolis, the last of them on a one-year deal.

On the floor she remained a useful shooter off the bench. In 43 regular-season games she averaged 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 22.2 minutes, hitting 46.0 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from three on 3.7 attempts a night (67 of 160).

In the three-game first-round series she put up 7.3 points and shot 44.4 percent from deep . Judging her production is straightforward.

The harder question for front offices is the noise that follows her. Cunningham draws attention for comments that travel well beyond the locker room , and some of that attention has landed awkwardly for a team still trying to turn a record offense into a longer playoff run. Cox shut that door.

Asked if any of the outside “stuff” would change how she evaluates Cunningham, she answered “No.” She then pointed to two productive years as a shooter, called her a steady voice in the locker room and a connector who brings both experience and levity, and said the Fever look forward to those talks. “She had a really productive year, and we’ll see just where things take us,” Cox said.

Openness from the front office does not lock Cunningham into a Fever jersey for 2027. Her situation is one of several decisions Indiana has to make, starting with Kelsey Mitchell after an MVP-caliber season in which she averaged 24.7 points and scored 1,086 (WNBA record) in 44 games .

Cunningham’s shooting and locker-room role give Indiana a reason to stay in the mix. Whether that interest survives a market that will have other options is the part Cox left open.
