Sophie Cunningham hailed as an ‘American Hero’ in wake of debate surrounding women’s sports
The Fever star wants basketball to remain the focus while continuing to defend her views

Sophie Cunningham never expected to become one of the most discussed figures in women’s basketball, but the Indiana Fever guard has found herself at the center of a much larger debate after speaking publicly about transgender participation in women’s sports.
Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom believes Cunningham ’s willingness to share her views has made her an important figure for athletes and fans who feel the same way, calling her an “American hero” during an appearance on Fox News.
“First of all, I want to say she’s an American hero,” Kanter Freedom said. “Everywhere she goes, I see now a lot of people are coming out and actually defending her.”
Kanter Freedom acknowledged that Cunningham has faced criticism since discussing the issue, but said public backlash often follows athletes who take controversial positions.
“Obviously, if you’re standing up for something that you believe in, you’re going to get hate all the time,” he said. “But I think she’s inspiring not only the players in the WNBA but girls from all over the world, not only in America.”
The former NBA center added that he has received messages from supporters internationally asking him to pass along their appreciation if he ever meets Cunningham .
“They’re saying, ‘Hey, if you ever see Sophie, can you please say hi to her?’” he said.
Cunningham becomes a major figure
Cunningham became a prominent voice in the discussion after saying in July that she does not believe transgender women should compete against biological women in female sports.
Her comments quickly drew both support and criticism, turning the Fever guard into a central figure in a wider cultural debate.
The conversation has extended beyond Cunningham ’s original remarks, with supporters organizing rallies around Fever games while others have pushed back in support of transgender inclusion.
The issue has also brought renewed attention to how professional sports leagues handle conversations surrounding gender and competition, even though no transgender woman currently plays in the WNBA.
While the debate has dominated much of the discussion surrounding Cunningham , she has also pushed for greater focus on basketball and the achievements of players on the court.
Speaking about the media attention surrounding the WNBA, Cunningham said athletes are often encouraged to use their platforms but can face criticism when they do.
“People are like, ‘You have a platform. Use it.’ And then, once you use it, it’s like, ‘Go back to playing basketball,’” Cunningham said.
“I think I could do both. Ask me about what’s going on and what I said. And also ask me how great my teammates are doing, how great our team is doing, how great the league is doing.”
Cunningham calls for stronger leadership
Beyond the controversy surrounding her own comments, Cunningham has also spoken about the direction she believes the league should take as it continues to grow.
The Fever guard said the WNBA needs leadership that prioritizes players and the future of the sport.
“I think it needs a person in power who is bold, who is confident, who wants the best for the players and not maybe for themselves all the time,” Cunningham said.
Cunningham ’s position has made her one of the most recognizable names in the current women’s sports conversation. Whether praised or criticized, her comments have ensured that debates around the future of women’s athletics remain firmly in the spotlight.
