Sophie Cunningham just gave fans a reason to compare her to Stephen Curry

Sophie Cunningham went from playing just seven minutes in one game to delivering a key performance, just as her three-point numbers put her back in the spotlight.

Sophie Cunningham went from having an important role in the Indiana Fever rotation to barely seeing the floor in one game. The decision drew criticism, but it also raised a more interesting question: just how good has her three-point shooting really been this season?

From 20 minutes to just seven

The drop in her playing time was obvious. On September 18, Cunningham played 20 minutes against Toronto , but two days later, against the Washington Mystics, she spent just seven minutes on the court .

Stephanie White explained that the decision was related to Cunningham’s effort on defense and on the boards.

Sophie Cunningham decided to look in the mirror

After that game, Cunningham spoke about her responsibility within the team and what she could do differently.

“I had to look in the mirror: What can I do better?” she said.

The answer came on the court. Against Minnesota, Cunningham played 29 minutes again, scored 11 points, knocked down three of her six three-point attempts and finished with a +17 . She also reached 2,000 career points.

The turnaround was obvious, but the stat that eventually put her name alongside Steph Curry came from somewhere else: her podcast, No Hesitation .

The stat that put her next to Steph Curry

During the episode, her co-host pointed out that Cunningham was shooting 42.7% from three, while Curry owns a 42.4% career three-point percentage .

There is an important distinction to the comparison: it does not mean Cunningham is a better shooter than Curry, because it compares what Sophie is doing in 2026 with Steph’s career average. But that is exactly what makes the number interesting: this season, Cunningham is shooting above the mark Curry has built over the course of his career .

Her co-host also brought up Steph to put those nights when the shots simply do not fall into perspective. He noted that even Curry has finished games without making a three and has had hundreds of games below percentages that would normally seem unthinkable for one of the greatest shooters in basketball history.

And perhaps that is the most interesting part of the comparison. Cunningham does not need a perfect night for her season to speak for itself. That 42.7% shows what she is doing when you look at the bigger picture.
