Sophie Cunningham's next WNBA team identified as Indiana Fever exit gains steam
The divisive Cunningham could have a future at a different destination next season.
Even before the 2026 WNBA season , Sophie Cunningham had become one of the most talked about players in the league. She turned that into a major podcast deal midway through last season.
But 2026 has been a whole other story. Her comments on transgender athletes sparked outrage among many , and it has put a target on her back over the past month and change. That national spotlight could very well lead to Cunningham landing with a new team next season.
She signed a one-year deal in the offseason to stay with the Indiana Fever . So far this season, she has played her role as a spark off the bench, but the team probably doesn't want the constant spotlight, especially when it's overly negative.
Sophie Cunningham expected to leave Indiana Fever in the offseason
With the idea of Cunningham leaving, Sportskeeda got to work on identifying the top five landing spots for the 30-year-old veteran. Coming in at No. 1 are the New York Liberty .
Sophie Cunningham to the New York Liberty is a possibility, as they are not afraid to make bold moves. The Liberty made a splash last offseason by signing three-time WNBA All-Star Satou Sabally to an already loaded team that includes Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones. However, Sabally has played in just 10 games so far due to lingering injury issues. Cunningham could be New York's occasional starter and a key contributor off the bench.
While the Liberty are the top potential destination, four other teams were also linked that make sense: Minnesota Lynx , Washington Mystics , Dallas Wings , and Phoenix Mercury .
Set to be an unrestricted free agent next offseason, Cunningham will have plenty of options to choose from. Returning to the Fever might not be one of them.
