Sophie Cunningham takes over WNBA break as fans recreate her at parade in her honor
Fans are turning Cunningham into the star of her own parade
Sophie Cunningham may not have been selected to represent the United States at the FIBA World Cup in Berlin, but that does not mean she is not one of the players having a major influence on women’s basketball. Her popularity has grown significantly since she joined the Indiana Fever following a trade from the Phoenix Mercury, but Cunningham herself has played a major role in that rise . Her personality, playing style and leadership have helped turn her into a player fans see as an important figure in the league.
Even though her recent comments about transgender athletes have earned her heavy criticism and plenty of hate on social media, there is still a section of fans that continues to support her strongly . Cunningham has acknowledged and appreciated that support.
Her fans are still showing up for her
The fans just can't get enough of Cunningham, and the Indiana Fever guard has now reacted to a rally organized in her honor . While her teammates are in Berlin, Germany, for the FIBA World Cup and the WNBA takes a break for the tournament, Cunningham is enjoying some downtime . Her popularity, however, has not slowed down, as she shared her reaction to a post showing fans dressed up as her during the parade.
The clip shared by Cunningham on her Instagram Story featured fans of different ages wearing Fever uniforms inspired by her, complete with blonde wigs matching Cunningham’s hair . The moment also included her viral DeWanna Bonner gesture, with fans recreating Cunningham’s iconic point in a completely different setting . Spectators could also be seen cheering as the parade passed by.
Cunningham’s popularity continues to grow despite the controversy
While her comments have divided the national audience, her popularity appears to keep rising. She has even surpassed Caitlin Clark in Instagram followers , despite Clark being widely recognized as one of the players who has not only changed the game but also transformed the way women’s sports are viewed.
Cunningham has become a larger-than-life figure in the sport. From her latest calendar release with Sports Illustrated to her reaction to a simple rally organized by fans, her connection with the fanbase is clear. And for now, there is nothing indicating that the momentum behind Cunningham’s popularity is slowing down anytime soon.
