The Indiana locker room erupted after the team finally earned a badly needed break

The Indiana Fever had just finished one of the most demanding stretches on their schedule when Stephanie White delivered the kind of postgame announcement every exhausted team wants to hear.

Moments after Indiana closed a five-game road trip with a 113-90 win over the Chicago Sky , White told her players they would have the next two days off.

The locker room response was immediate, with Caitlin Clark jumping out of her seat and celebrating alongside teammates. The timing made sense.

Indiana had played six games in 10 days, including five away from home, and Sunday’s matchup came less than 24 hours after a 109-102 loss to the New York Liberty .

The Fever responded with one of their strongest offensive performances of the trip, led by Clark ’s 37 points and Kelsey Mitchell ’s 30. That made the two-day break feel less like a reward and more like a necessary reset.

White knows when team needs a break

White has spoken openly about the strain of a WNBA season and the importance of leaning on the people around her when energy runs low.

“The reality is just like players: there are some days where it's like you just don't have it,” White said before the Liberty game. “Like, you just don't have it. Like, life happens. On those days, I can go to them, and I can say, 'Y'all, I need you today.'”

She also emphasized that leadership doesn't always mean carrying everything alone.

“And I think when you learn in life as we get older, we learn different things that we're not always leading from the front,” White added. “This is one thing we talked about with our team all the time.”

That message has been central to how she has handled a season filled with travel, injuries, pressure and outside noise.

Clark and teammates become part of White’s support system

White has also credited her players with helping her through difficult moments, saying the relationship works both ways.

“Sometimes you need somebody to lift you up,” she said. “Sometimes you need to lift somebody else up.”

She added: “I mean, look, these players are really incredible, like the way that they're able to minimize the outside noise. The way they're able to show up for each other and for me every day, [and] they lift me up.”

Sunday’s celebration was a lighter example of that connection.

The Fever now have four days before hosting the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday, giving Clark , Mitchell and the rest of the roster a rare chance to recover before the next stretch begins.

Indiana needed the win in Chicago. Judging by Clark’s reaction, the players may have appreciated White’s next announcement just as much.
