The Indiana Fever's latest move has led some to advise Caitlin Clark to leave: “Please don't sign that extension”

The Indiana Fever’s latest front-office appointment has sparked considerable criticism among supporters, with some fans even urging Caitlin Clark to reconsider her long-term future with the franchise.

Indiana has hired Sheri Sam as assistant general manager, marking the first significant front-office appointment following a major shake-up within the organization.

Sam is expected to begin her new position on Monday, November 2, with responsibilities focused on scouting and analytics.

Her arrival comes after team president Kelly Krauskopf stepped down and general manager Amber Cox was dismissed, leaving several questions surrounding the franchise's leadership structure.

However, the appointment hasn't convinced everyone that Indiana is heading in the right direction. Social media quickly filled with frustrated reactions, including one supporter who delivered a direct message to Clark : “Caitlin, please don't sign that extension.”

Another fan questioned the timing of the decision, suggesting that appointing an assistant GM before finding a permanent general manager could create unnecessary complications.

“Wouldn't the GM want to select their own assistant or at least have a say?” the supporter asked.

Others expressed concerns about what they considered familiar connections within the organization, arguing that the Fever needed new perspectives rather than more of the same.

Some even described the franchise as dysfunctional and stuck in the past.

Despite the criticism, Sam brings considerable basketball experience to Indianapolis. She spent 10 seasons playing in the WNBA, winning two championships, before moving into scouting and front-office work.

Most recently, she served as scouting manager for the Portland Trail Blazers, working on player evaluation and pre-draft scouting. She also played one season for Indiana in 2007.

Scouting could become crucial to Indiana's rebuilding plans

The Fever have also appointed Vernard Hollins as a scout, adding another experienced evaluator to their basketball operations department.

Hollins spent a decade playing professionally overseas, potentially giving Indiana valuable insight into international talent.

According to IndyStar reporter Chloe Peterson , the organization hasn't established a specific timeline for hiring its next general manager. Indiana has enlisted Excel Search & Advisory to assist with the recruitment process.

The franchise also reportedly has no plans to appoint another team president, with Pacers Sports & Entertainment chief executive Mel Raines overseeing operations for now.

Whoever eventually takes the general manager position will inherit significant responsibilities. Clark and Aliyah Boston provide an excellent foundation, but several important roster decisions remain.

Kelsey Mitchell's future will be particularly important, as retaining the star guard could consume considerable salary-cap space.

Clark's potential eligibility for a substantial pay increase under the new collective bargaining agreement also adds another complication, although she's previously indicated a willingness to make sacrifices to help Indiana build a competitive roster.

With several players already occupying valuable portions of the salary cap, finding affordable contributors could determine how successful the Fever's next roster becomes.

That's where Sam and Hollins could make an immediate difference. Identifying promising college prospects, international players and overlooked talent will be essential if Indiana wants to surround its established stars with sufficient depth.
