Warning for Caitlin Clark: "If Kelsey Mitchell leaves, the Indiana Fever are done"

Indiana’s offseason could hinge on whether its four-time All-Star chooses to stay or explore a new opportunity

Cheryl Miller has delivered a blunt warning to the Indiana Fever as Kelsey Mitchell approaches unrestricted free agency: losing the four-time All-Star could dramatically alter the franchise’s direction.

Speaking on WNBA Showtime, Miller urged Indiana to keep Mitchell happy and retain her, arguing that the Fever’s outlook could change completely if their veteran guard walks away.

“You better make that young lady happy,” Miller said. “You better keep Kelsey Mitchell there. Otherwise, Indiana Fever, it’s a wrap. It’s a wrap for you if that young lady leaves.”

The timing makes the warning significant. Indiana has just been eliminated by the Las Vegas Aces, while Mitchell is preparing to enter an open market for the first time in her career.

Mitchell’s leverage comes after a remarkable 2026 campaign. She averaged 24.7 points per game and finished with 1,086 points, a new single-season WNBA record. She also produced 27 consecutive games with at least 20 points, another league record.

Those numbers explain why Indiana views keeping her as a major offseason priority. General manager Amber Cox has made it clear that the organization wants Mitchell to remain a Fever player for the rest of her career.

“She has a lot of equity in this franchise and has put in a lot of time,” said Cox . “Kelsey obviously has the opportunity and has earned the right to explore what other opportunities are out there, but our goal is for her to be a Fever girl for the rest of her career.”

Mitchell’s decision could reshape Indiana’s plans

The complication is that Mitchell has made it clear that loyalty won’t be the only factor in her decision. After the playoff exit, she said she needs to be “selfish” about what’s best for her career, including winning and individual success.

She also discussed the unusual pressures that come with playing for the Fever alongside Caitlin Clark.

That leaves Indiana with an important balancing act. Aliyah Boston has already signed a major contract extension, while Clark is also expected to receive a significant long-term deal. With more money committed to its young stars, the Fever could face difficult decisions when trying to retain Mitchell .

Still, losing Mitchell wouldn’t necessarily end Indiana’s competitive ambitions. Her departure would free significant salary-cap space, giving the front office an opportunity to reshape the roster rather than simply finding another player to replicate everything Mitchell provides.

Her scoring, shot-making and ability to create offense would be difficult to replace, but Indiana could use the available money to address several weaknesses at once.

The Fever could prioritize defensive versatility, athletic wings, frontcourt depth and perimeter shooting around Clark and Boston . Building a more balanced roster could help Indiana avoid becoming overly dependent on its offensive firepower, particularly against elite teams capable of exploiting defensive mismatches.

Players such as Dallas Wings forward Awak Kuier or Los Angeles Sparks wing Rae Burrell have been mentioned as examples of the type of talent Indiana could pursue. Kelsey Plum could also be an option on the market, although the Fever might prefer to spread Mitchell’s salary slot across multiple additions.
