Canelo Alvarez becomes champion once again, with Oleksandr Usyk right by his side

In what has become almost a given at this point in his career, Canelo Alvarez 's latest bout ended in a unanimous decision. This time around it went his way, as he defeated Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and became the WBC super middleweight champion .

Alvarez had lost that title just over a year ago, when he lost his undisputed super middleweight titles to Terence Crawford . Bud dominated Alvarez in that fight, so Canelo need a big bounce back against Mbilli. It wasn't quite a vintage performance, but Alvarez put together a solid fight . Since May 7, 2022, all nine of Canelo's bouts have ended in a unanimous decision , with two of them not ending in his favor.

Canelo Alvarez hasn't knocked out an opponent since November 6, 2021

Alvarez's last knockout came against Caleb Plant in November of 2021 . It's fair to wonder if Alvarez has truly lost his knockout power, although he still punches extremely hard. He just can't seem to connect on big shots like he used to, and opponents nowadays exercise a good amount of caution when facing him.

Canelo had elite support on hand in Riyadh. By his side every step of the way was Oleksandr Usyk . The legendary heavyweight champion helped Alvarez train in the leadup to the fight , and they've become good friends over the years. Usyk had also previously trained with Anthony Joshua , showcasing his willingness to work side by side with the best of the best if he feels there's chemistry between him and the other boxer.

At 36 years old , Alvarez showed he can still beat strong competition. He doesn't move or punch quite like in his younger days, but he's far from finished in the boxing scene.
