Former world boxing champion Zolani Tete was killed in a shooting outside his home in South Africa , government officials reported.

Thus, the country's Minister of Sports, Gayton McKenzie, said that Tete, 38, died after being shot in his car, while a 27-year-old woman who was traveling with him in the vehicle is hospitalized after being shot several times.

Tete, who held WBF flyweight world titles between 2007 and 2008 and the WBO bantamweight title in 2017 and 2019 , was waiting for the door to his home to be opened when he was ambushed by two armed suspects.

"The World Boxing Council (WBC) mourned the passing of Zolani Tete. "Our deepest condolences go out to his family, loved ones, and all those who were touched by his extraordinary career," it said on social media.'

According to some local media, Tete was planning to return to the ring in November after serving a four-year ban for doping. The boxer held the record for the fastest "knockout" in a world title fight by defeating fellow South African Gonya 11 seconds into the opening round in the WBO bantamweight world championship.
