"P aulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina will not be at Lionel Messi's farewell with the Argentina national team. Roma decided not to authorize the trip of its two footballers to Buenos Aires for the tribute prepared on October 6 at the Monumental.

The decision has a particular feature: neither of them was supposed to travel to play in the friendly against Benin. Both had been invited by the AFA as members of the squad that won the World Cup in Qatar 2022, as part of a celebration intended to bring together Messi’s former teammates and their families.

A trip outside the call-up

Since he was not part of the official squad call-up for the match, his presence in Buenos Aires depended on permission from Roma . The Italian club decided not to grant it and publicly explained the reasons.

'“ AS Roma announces that Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina will not participate in the event organized in Argentina for the match between Argentina and Benin on October 6”, the club reported .'

Roma indicated that the decision is due to “sporting and logistical reasons”. The club focused on the length of the intercontinental trip and the proximity of its upcoming official commitments.

The schedule helps explain the Italian team’s position. Roma will visit Como on October 11 for Serie A, just five days after the tribute in Buenos Aires. In addition, the side managed by Gian Piero Gasperini will host Real Madrid on October 14 in the Champions League .

Roma also made it clear that its decision does not imply downplaying the tribute. In the same statement, it expressed its “greatest respect for Lionel Messi and for his extraordinary career” and wished him a special night together with the Argentine Football Association .

Dybala and Molina will have to follow from Italy the farewell of the man who was their teammate and captain during the conquest of the Qatar World Cup . On October 6, Argentina will host Benin at the Monumental in a match that will mark Messi's final appearance wearing the national team's jersey.
