Kylian Mbappé or Lamine Yamal: Who will win a second World Cup first?
Two of the biggest soccer superstars have an opportunity to lift the trophy in 2030

Every generation produces a handful of players who seem destined to define world football. Right now, two of the biggest names on the planet happen to share more than just superstar status.
Both Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal are World Cup champions before the age of 20. Mbappé helped France lift the trophy in 2018, becoming the first teenager since Pelé to score in a World Cup final. Eight years later, Yamal followed a remarkably similar path, playing a key role in Spain's 2026 World Cup triumph and cementing his place among the sport's brightest young stars.
The question now is simple: Which LaLiga superstar has the better chance of winning a second World Cup? The answer is much more complicated.
The case for Kylian Mbappé
If the debate were based solely on proven World Cup excellence, Mbappé would be the obvious choice. The French captain has already assembled one of the greatest World Cup résumés in history. He won the tournament in 2018, reached another final in 2022, and continued producing elite performances during France's 2026 run . He has become the World Cup's all-time leading scorer and remains one of the most feared attackers in international football.
At 27 years old, Mbappé should still be in his prime when the 2030 World Cup arrives. France also continues to possess one of the deepest talent pools in world football. Even after falling to Spain in the 2026 semifinals, Les Bleus remain a perennial contender capable of reaching the latter stages of every major tournament.
There is also the simple reality that Mbappé has already demonstrated he can carry a national team through the pressure of multiple World Cups. Experience matters, and no active player may be better equipped for those moments.
The case for Lamine Yamal
Then again, Yamal has one advantage Mbappé cannot match: time. The Barcelona sensation is only 19 years old and already owns a World Cup winner's medal. He could realistically play in three or even four more World Cups if he remains healthy.
That matters because World Cup success is often a numbers game. The more opportunities a player receives, the greater the odds of eventually lifting another trophy. Spain's outlook is also extremely encouraging. The current Spanish generation appears built for sustained success.
Led by Yamal and a young core that already delivered a World Cup title, Spain could remain among the tournament favorites for years to come. Yamal was one of the defining figures of the 2026 tournament and finished among the competition's most dynamic attacking players, leading the World Cup in completed dribbles.
His influence is growing beyond the national team as well. Yamal enters the 2026-27 season as one of the leading Ballon d'Or candidates after helping Barcelona win LaLiga and Spain capture the World Cup.
This debate ultimately comes down to one variable. Mbappé may have the stronger individual résumé today, but Yamal has a longer runway. When the 2030 World Cup kicks off, Mbappé will be 31. That's still an excellent age for an elite forward, but it is unlikely to represent the absolute peak of his powers.
Yamal, meanwhile, will be just 23. By 2034, Mbappé will likely be nearing the end of his international career. Lamine could still be in the middle of his prime. That difference creates multiple chances for Spain's young star to capture another title.
So who has the edge? If the question is who is the better player today, many would still choose Mbappé. If the question is who is more likely to win another World Cup from this point forward, the answer is probably Lamine Yamal. Not because he is already superior to Mbappé, but because he combines elite talent with something every great player needs in pursuit of football immortality: opportunity.
