Gilberto Mora, the "10" kid already setting his sights on Europe: from record to record, on the radar of the big clubs, and a key date
This weekend he became the youngest player to score and to wear Mexico's number 10 jersey

Gilberto Mora is 17 years old, but he is starting to run out of youthful records to break. The latest fell against Colombia. The young Xolos de Tijuana talent received the ball inside the box, feinted, created space between the defenders, and found the opening to score. A beautiful goal. But above all, a historic one.
At 17 years and 347 days old , Mora became the youngest footballer to score for Mexico’s senior national team . And he did it just a few days after Rafa Márquez, newly arrived on the national team bench, handed him the number 10 shirt. No one had ever worn it for Mexico at such a young age.
Two records in just a few days that explain better than anything the magnitude a footballer is reaching, one to whom Mexico has decided to hand the keys to its future even though he has not yet come of age. It was already clear at the World Cup that Mora is one of the chosen.
And that's why Rafa Márquez decided after the World Cup to give him responsibility. Mora was already wearing the number 10 at Tijuana and now he does so with the national team as well. It's not just any number in Mexico. It was worn by footballers such as Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Luis García or Giovani dos Santos , among others. Now it belongs to a boy born in 2008. And his first response in that shirt was a goal.
Mora came on in the second half against Colombia with Mexico trailing. In the 62nd minute, he received the ball inside the box, near the left side, cut inside and finished to make it 1-1. It was his first goal for the senior national team and also the first goal of Rafa Márquez’s new spell as head coach.
From one record to another
Just over two years ago, Mora had not even made his professional debut. He did so on August 18, 2024 with Xolos de Tijuana. He was 15 years and 308 days old and became the third-youngest footballer to debut in Mexico. Shortly afterward, at 15 years and 320 days old, he also became the youngest player to start and score in a Mexican League match.
His progression eventually took him to the 2026 World Cup. There he once again challenged the calendar, making his tournament debut at 17 years and 240 days old, becoming the sixth-youngest player in history to take part in a World Cup. Only Norman Whiteside (Northern Ireland), Eto"o (Cameroon), Opabunmi (Nigeria), Olembe (Cameroon) and Pelé (Brazil) had appeared in a World Cup at a younger age.
At 17 years and 259 days old, he became the second-youngest footballer to start in a World Cup knockout match, behind only Pelé in 1958. Debut at 15. World Cup at 17. Mexico’s ‘10’ at 17. Senior national team goalscorer at 17...
And there appears the date marked in red around Gilberto Mora: October 14, 2026. That day he will turn 18. Until now, his age has been one of the major constraints on any international move. Once he reaches adulthood, the scenario changes and the 2027 winter transfer window emerges as the first major opportunity for him to make the leap to European football. And he is no shortage of suitors. With Madrid and Barça, to name the two biggest in Spain, closely monitoring his development. Borussia Dortmund, experts at snapping up young talent, also appear among the most interested clubs, as does Benfica, experts at signing players who multiply their value in a very short time. Rafaela Pimenta, Haaland's agent and one of the most prestigious in the world, looks after him.
In June, Xolos announced Mora’s contract renewal for three seasons through what the club itself described as the most important contractual agreement in its history for a footballer. The contract also includes "an exit mechanism specifically designed between the club, the player, and his agent" , according to sources from the Mexican club. A way to protect Xolos without closing the door on the next step in his career. Because in Tijuana they also know that keeping Mora indefinitely is impossible, and it does not want to be a mere extra in this story. That mechanism would block the rest of the Mexican teams and would involve a clause of around 25 million euros.
But it should not be taken for granted that Mora will leave this winter. It is likely, yes, but nothing has been decided. And there will possibly lie the most important decision of a career that so far has advanced without brakes and is already aiming very high.
