“Not on my watch”: Kily González’s response when asked about Messi

The Inter Miami coach, who has long been associated with Rosario Central, was asked about the possibility of Lionel Messi joining Newell’s and responded with a playful jab, though he made it clear that he would support whatever decision the forward makes.

Cristian “Kily” González was asked about the possibility of Lionel Messi one day playing for Newell’s, and he responded with a remark that quickly took on the historical rivalry between Newell’s and Rosario Central—a club with which the current Inter Miami coach strongly identifies.

“As far as I’m concerned, no,” the coach replied with a laugh when presented with that scenario. The remark was taken as a playful soccer jab, especially given his past with Rosario Central, although González was quick to clarify that he would support whatever decision Messi makes.

Kily’s Response and His Support for Messi

González is an icon at Rosario Central , both for his career as a player and his subsequent tenure as a coach. That’s why his response to the possibility of Messi wearing a Newell’s jersey was colored by that rivalry. However, the coach also made it clear that his relationship with the forward transcends any jersey.

“We’re both from a city that’s crazy about soccer, a city full of passion. We both root for different teams, but today we’re together. Ever since I arrived and got to know him, all I’ve wanted is for him to be happy.”

“It’s entirely his decision. Whatever he chooses to do, he’ll always have my support. Not just today because I’m his coach, but because I’ve always supported him. I just want him to enjoy himself, and whether he gets the chance or decides to go to Rosario and play—I’m not in favor of it, but I’ll always support him as best I can,” said the coach

The question came up after the 2-2 draw between Inter Miami and San Diego FC, a game in which Messi scored one of his team's goals . The forward scored on a free kick and was once again one of the main offensive threats for the American team, which is coached by the former Rosario Central player.

For now, the possibility of Messi playing for Newell’s remains purely speculative, and there is no confirmation that the Argentine has decided to return to Argentine soccer. The captain’s contract with Inter Miami runs through 2028, while González, caught between the rivalry between Central and Newell’s, made his position clear: “As far as I’m concerned, no”—though whatever path Messi chooses, he will have his support.
