The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu , has confirmed in a statement that he will not play in this Sunday's match between his country and Israel, which will be held in Debrecen (Hungary).

In his statement, he expresses this: "Representing my country means everything to me. I have the utmost respect for each of my teammates, for the head coach, for his coaching staff, and for the Irish people. However, I have made a decision that I have not taken lightly. I am a man of strong faith and I try, as far as possible, to be a person of character and principles. T herefore, I believe it would be a mistake to take part in the upcoming matches against Israel. My decision is based exclusively on my personal conviction that killing innocent people is wrong. It is important to point out that my stance is not against the Israeli people or the Jewish community, but against the atrocities being committed in the region. In life, there are few occasions when one has the opportunity to stand up for something more important, and I firmly believe that this is one of them ".

The situation caused Ireland not to carry out the scheduled training session this Saturday at Debrecen's Nagyerdei Stadium. The players remained in meetings for hours with the manager, Heimir Hallgrímsson, and his coaching staff to analyze what decision to make overall. In the end, the Irish team will wear black armbands in solidarity with "all the lives lost in Gaza".

The conflict had been brewing in recent days , even beyond football, with numerous Irish athletes calling for the match not to be held . Inside the dressing room there are differing opinions about the matches against Israel, and some internationals have expressed their discomfort at having to play them.

Bazunu's stance creates a new scenario, as there is now the possibility that other players may decide not to take part. The Football Association of Ireland, for its part, maintains that the matches must be played, after having previously ruled out the option of a boycott.

Ireland will face Israel this Sunday in Debrecen and will play the same opponent again next October 4 in Serbia . The Federation had already warned that canceling the matches could cause significant financial losses and possible sporting consequences.
