What penalty could Mbappé face if he decides to leave Real Madrid?

The French forward would face severe punishment both on the sporting and financial fronts if he unilaterally terminates his contract signed through June 2029

'The environment surrounding Kylian Mbappé and the situation at Real Madrid continue to spark debate in international football following the analysis of the legal implications that an early departure by the French forward would entail. In the wake of various reports emerging in the European and French press, the regulatory framework of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players in the event of a unilateral termination has come under scrutiny.'

The forward born in Bondy signed a five-season contract in 2024 that ties him to the entity in the Spanish capital until June 30, 2029. Therefore, breaking that commitment early and without just cause would not depend solely on his own decision without entailing very serious legal consequences .

Suspension from four to six months during the protected period

'According to the strict regulations of the world football governing body, the first three years of a footballer’s contract if he is under 28 at the time of signing constitute the so-called "protected period." In the event of a breach without just cause during this period, FIFA provides for direct sporting sanctions that would bar the forward from playing official matches with any other club for between four and six months .'

Such restrictive measures would make it impossible for Mbappé to wear the jersey of any other elite institution while the sanction remains in force . The only exception provided for in the rule is that the footballer would still retain regulatory clearance to play official matches with the France National Team during that same period of suspension.

In addition, the rule clarifies that the sanction is paused during the summer break : the time between the last match of one season and the first of the next does not count toward the months of punishment

Multi-million compensation and damages

The punishment for the French forward would not only be sporting, but also financial and worth millions. The regulations establish that both Mbappé and the team that signs him would have to jointly pay substantial compensation to Real Madrid for the damages caused .

To determine the exact amount of such compensation, FIFA uses various objective criteria as a reference : the value of the footballer’s services, the remuneration remaining under his contract, the replacement costs that the injured entity must assume, and the amortized value of a hypothetical transfer fee not received by the white club’s board.

Informational sources such as Sports Illustrated, Mundo Deportivo, Radio Mitre and Líder en Deportes agree in emphasizing that this sanctioning mechanism would only be deactivated if both parties agree to a termination by mutual consent , thus avoiding any disciplinary litigation before FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber.
