Bill Gates: « I will always choose a lazy person to do a difficult job »

The well-known quote holds that he would choose a lazy person to tackle a difficult job because they would find an easy way to solve it.

"The phrase has become one of the best-known reflections on productivity, effort, and ingenuity attributed to Bill Gates . The full version adds that this lazy person will find a simple way to do it.

The idea starts from a paradox: whoever receives a complicated task may devote many hours to the usual procedure, while whoever tries to reduce the effort looks from the outset for an alternative to reach the same result.

Technology and automation

This phrase has become one of the best-known reflections on productivity, effort, and ingenuity. It does not necessarily mean working worse, but rather asking whether there is a different way to do what one has been tasked with.

The theory is based on the idea that a person who seeks to avoid unnecessary work may be forced to think in a different way and find a much more efficient procedure

Automating processes, eliminating unnecessary steps, or designing tools that solve a task in seconds are common strategies in technology companies. The key, he indicates, lies in achieving the objective with resources in a smarter way.

Gates built much of his career around technology and the creation of tools to make tasks easier. Microsoft, founded by him and Paul Allen in 1975 , turned software into a tool that became increasingly present in homes, businesses, and educational centers. One of the major changes in computing was automating tasks that previously required a great deal of manual work, and today this is growing even more with Copilot AI. From spreadsheets to word processors, many digital tools were created with a very specific purpose: to make simpler what previously required more time and effort.

The trail of the expression goes further back. Clarence E. Bleicher, then president of Chrysler's DeSoto division, testified on January 31, 1947, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare.

' Bleicher said that, when faced with a difficult job for which there was no simple method, he would put a lazy man in charge , because within ten days he would have an easy way to do it. To Senator Ellender, who asked him why he would choose a lazy man rather than a hardworking one, he replied that "the lazy man will find an easy way to do it."'

The wording recorded in that intervention does not literally match the quote that circulates under Gates's name. It does, however, share the central idea: assigning a complicated task to someone who will seek to reduce the effort needed to solve it.
