P eter Cullen , the voice that made O ptimus Prime one of the most recognizable characters in the world of cinema, died on Wednesday, August 26 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 85 years old.
The news was confirmed by his agent, Kevin Motley . For more than four decades, Cullen was linked to the leader of the Autobots, from the original Transformers animated series in 1984 to his final appearance as Optimus in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts , released in 2023.
The personal story that shaped Optimus Prime's voice
Cullen made the voice of Optimus Prime one of the most recognizable in pop culture. He first portrayed the character in the original 1984 Transformers animated series and reprised the role in multiple films, series, and video games over the decades, including the live-action movies that began in 2007. His last appearance as Optimus was in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, in 2023.
But the actor did not limit himself to lending his voice to the Transformers character; he was much more than Optimus Prime. He performed the voice of Eeyore (Ígor) in Winnie the Pooh, and also portrayed K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider as well as in other film and television projects. He even created the unsettling sounds of the Predator in the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
One of the most moving details of his legacy lies precisely behind Optimus Prime. To build the voice of the Autobot leader, Cullen was inspired by his brother Larry, a Vietnam veteran. He wanted Optimus to convey authority and strength, but also humanity, compassion, and serenity.
The family reported that Cullen died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. The cause of death was not disclosed. In his farewell message, he asked that his legacy be remembered with compassion, integrity, and loyalty, and with a phrase that perfectly sums up the character he turned into a legend: “be strong enough to be gentle".
