Questions about Melania Trump’s role in the White House have resurfaced after author Michael Wolff claimed that the First Lady has not spent a single night at the White House during President Donald Trump’s second term, fueling renewed speculation about her unusually limited public presence.

Wolff, who has written several books about Trump and his inner circle, made the comments during an appearance on The Daily Beast podcast. According to the author, Melania has been largely absent from the White House since Trump returned to office in January 2025, appearing only occasionally at official events and public functions.

“Her official job, the official part of being a first lady to do good works, she has converted into private enterprise for herself,” Wolff said. The claims come after Melania made her first public appearance at the White House in roughly a month, a return that drew attention not only because of her absence but also because of ongoing reports about tensions within Trump’s inner circle.

Melania has privately expressed frustration over Harp’s influence

Wolff alleged that Melania has been uncomfortable with the prominent role played by Natalie Harp, a longtime Trump aide often described as one of the president’s closest advisers. Harp has become a constant presence around Trump, frequently accompanying him during public appearances and daily activities.

According to Wolff, Melania has privately expressed frustration over Harp’s influence and has preferred not to be at the White House when Harp is present. The author compared the situation to Trump’s first administration, when former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks was frequently seen around the president. Wolff argued that Trump has long created what he described as an awkward dynamic between Melania and the women who occupy influential positions in his orbit.

The debate surrounding Melania’s role has also extended beyond personal relationships and into the structure of the White House itself. Historians have noted that the East Wing traditionally serves as the operational center for a first lady’s initiatives, charitable projects, and public outreach efforts.

Staffing levels have become another point of comparison

Katherine A.S. Sibley, a history professor at Saint Joseph’s University, told The Guardian that recent changes to the White House and the diminished visibility of the East Wing symbolize a broader shift in how the role of first lady is being treated.

Staffing levels have become another point of comparison. While recent first ladies typically maintained teams of roughly 20 staff members to oversee policy initiatives, public engagements, and charitable programs, reports indicate that Melania’s office currently operates with only five staffers.

The First Lady’s business ventures have also attracted attention. Unlike many presidential spouses who wait until after leaving Washington to publish memoirs or pursue media projects, Melania launched a book and participated in a documentary project during her husband’s presidency. Reports have indicated that Amazon paid approximately $40 million for the documentary, with a substantial portion of that revenue reportedly going directly to Melania.

Amazon is also developing a television series centered on the First Lady.

For critics, those ventures reinforce the perception that Melania has focused more on private opportunities than on the traditional responsibilities associated with the position. Wolff dismissed the documentary as “empty content,” arguing that it revealed little about her personal life or public mission.
