Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island mansion was once an heiress’s unruly seaside kingdom

A house with two lives

The oceanfront home Taylor Swift bought in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, has a story that began long before it inspired a Folklore song. Once known as Holiday House , the estate passed from an oil family to a wealthy patron of the arts whose life made her a favorite subject of local gossip. Today, it’s known around the world as Swift’s Rhode Island mansion.

In 1948, William Hale Harkness, an heir to the Standard Oil fortune, bought the property from the Snowden family for $80,000. His wife, Rebekah Harkness, would become its most talked-about resident. Swift purchased the estate in 2013 for a reported $17.75 million, paying cash through a trust named in the deed.

Before ‘Folklore,’ there was Holiday House

Set on roughly five acres, the Watch Hill property has more than 700 feet of oceanfront. But its most enduring feature may be the woman who turned it into a stage for her ambitions. After her husband died in 1954, Harkness used her inheritance to support the arts, eventually founding the Harkness Ballet in 1964.

Stories about Harkness’ lavish parties and unpredictable streak traveled around the community. One oft-repeated tale says she poured Champagne into her swimming pool and dyed a neighbor’s cat green. The details became part of her legend, though some versions changed over time: Swift’s song, for instance, turns the cat into a dog.

Swift discovered Harkness’ history while touring the house before buying it. That connection became “The Last Great American Dynasty,” a Folklore track that begins with Harkness and gradually draws a line to Swift herself. The mansion isn’t just the setting; it’s the thread tying their stories together.

The song gave Harkness’ reputation a second life, while also reflecting on how a woman’s independence can become the subject of other people’s gossip. Swift has described the appeal of writing about someone who owned her freedom even when it raised eyebrows.

Swift’s own chapter at Holiday House has included high-profile summer gatherings, but the estate remains a private home. In 2025, local records reported plans for about $1.7 million in renovations, including work on the kitchen and bathrooms and an addition. The permit offered a rare glimpse of changes to a property whose private life usually stays behind its shoreline.

The price jump from $80,000 in 1948 to $17.75 million in 2013 makes for a striking headline. Yet Holiday House has outlasted every sale price because of the lives attached to it: Harkness’ restless reinvention, Swift’s songwriting, and a seaside home that keeps finding its way into the story.
