Ben Affleck wanted to give his children love advice and got an unexpected response: "Are you the expert?"
The actor revealed how his teenage children react to his relationship advice and shared the other joke he got from Fin after finding a curious book in a bookstore.
Ben Affleck can boast an extensive career in Hollywood, two Academy Awards, and decades of experience in front of and behind the cameras. However, there is one area in which his own children seem quite unwilling to acknowledge his authority: love.
The actor tried to use his romantic experience to guide his teenage children, but they quickly found an argument to question his advice. And it wasn't the only joke he had to put up with.
Ben Affleck's advice that his children didn't let slide
According to the star of Argo, during dinner his children usually talk about their friends, their problems, and also their relationships. Affleck felt that his own experiences could be useful in teaching them a few lessons.
Until he tried to intervene in one of those conversations.
When he began to explain his point of view on a relationship, 17-year-old Fin responded with a question that provoked the audience’s laughter when the actor recalled it on television:
“Oh, and you’re a relationship expert?”
Affleck took the comment in stride. In fact, he admitted that his children have started exchanging glances when he launches into one of his dad speeches.
The actor summed up the new family situation by admitting that he has now become "the caricatured character in this story".
His history with Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lopez
The answer makes even more sense when you take into account that Affleck 's love life has made headlines for much of the past two decades.
The actor married Jennifer Garner in 2005, with whom he had three children, before separating in 2015 and finalizing their divorce in 2018 . Years later, he rekindled his relationship with Jennifer Lopez, whom he married in 2022. Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024 and the process was finalized in 2025.
That sentimental past ended up becoming material for his children’s jokes when Affleck tried to talk to them about relationships.
The book that sparked another joke about Affleck
The comment during dinner was not the only one. Affleck told of another scene alongside Fin while both were visiting a bookstore. Among the shelves they found a book titled I"m Sorry for Everything ( “Lo siento por todo” ).
As the actor recalled, his son saw the book and turned to him with an immediate quip:
“Look, Dad, it’s your autobiography.”
Affleck laughed again as he told the story and admitted that he even felt a certain pride in his son's sense of humor.

Beyond the jokes about his love life, the anecdotes led Affleck to acknowledge something many parents of teenagers can relate to.
The actor admitted that he never imagined the time would come when he would stop being the “cool dad” in the eyes of his children. Now they are the ones who question his advice and quickly find a way to answer him with humor.
And even less so when the conversation is about love.
