Denzel Washington: «If you watch the sun set before your eyes every day and do nothing to achieve your goals...»
The actor shared a simple formula for moving toward success: set daily goals, plan, and maintain discipline even when motivation is lacking.

"Denzel Washington doesn't believe that dreaming big is enough to achieve success. For the actor, aspirations need to become concrete goals and, above all, be translated into everyday actions.D
During a commencement speech he gave at Dillard University in Louisiana, the actor explained the detail of his statement. Before the students, he left a phrase that sums up his approach: “Dreams without goals are just dreams”. Without a plan to achieve them, he warned, they can end in disappointment.
The daily goal Denzel Washington sets for himself
Washington encouraged graduates to think big, take risks, and not be afraid of failure. But he also asked them to put their aspirations in writing and break them down into goals for life, the year, the month, and each day.
He himself tries to set a daily goal. The example he shared drew laughter from those present: sometimes, he said, his goal is simply not to insult someone. The anecdote served to explain that not all goals have to be extraordinary. What matters is having them and working to achieve them.
The actor insisted that discipline and consistency are needed, not just enthusiasm. He also reminded that planning is part of the job : working very hard does not guarantee progress if you do not know where you are going.
From there came another of the speech’s best-known lines: “Do not confuse movement with progress.” Being busy all the time does not necessarily mean getting closer to a goal. And he added
If you watch the sun set before your eyes every day and do nothing to achieve your goals, remember that dreams without goals are just dreams
His own story also had setbacks
Washington spoke about the risks of chasing a career and recalled that his path was not clear from the beginning either. Some 40 years before that speech, when he was in college, he had a 1.7 GPA and did not know which direction to take.
That is why his advice to the graduates was not to avoid failure at all costs . He encouraged them to try, step outside the familiar, and accept that making mistakes can be part of the journey. “Fail big,” was one of the ideas he conveyed before speaking about the importance of dreaming big and backing those aspirations with goals.
His proposal did not promise immediate results. It focused on something more practical: choosing a direction, organizing the steps, and sustaining the effort day after day.
For Washington, success is also about helping others
The actor closed his message with a reflection on money and recognition. He recalled that life is not measured solely by what a person accumulates, but also by what they do with their opportunities and abilities.
His recommendation to the graduates was clear: “Do not aspire only to make a living. Aspire to make a difference.” For Washington, helping others is not something separate from success, but rather one of the most valuable ways to give it meaning.
In his speech, the formula was summed up in three steps: set goals, work with discipline and use what you have achieved to contribute to the lives of other people.
