Michael B. Jordan as MJ? This is Andrew Garfield's bold proposal for his Spider-Man: "We would have an interracial romance"'
In the 2012 and 2014 films, the actor asked Sony for the superhero to be bisexual

A ndrew Garfield portrayed Spider-Man between 2012 and 2014 in two films: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ , which were heavily criticized at the time but are now acclaimed. However, few know that the actor, now 43 years old, asked for the superhero to be bisexual, something Sony rejected.
Garfield asked for Michael B. Jordan to be "MJ". He explained this several years ago in an interview with The Independient, noting that, in the end, the studio decided to keep only Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy as Spider-Man's love interest.
'“I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since ‘The Wire’. He’s so charismatic and talented. It would be even better, we’d have an interracial romance. I wasn’t joking about MJ. And I was like, "What if MJ is a guy?" Why can’t we find out that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s not even groundbreaking! So, why can’t he be gay? why can’t he like boys?” , Garfield wondered.'
“ I worked harder than I have ever worked on anything and I’m really proud of it, but I didn’t feel represented. There was an interview I did where I said, ‘Why can’t Peter explore his bisexuality in his next movie? Why can’t MJ be a boy?’ Then I was really pressured to recant and apologize for saying something that is legitimate to think and feel. So I said, ‘Okay, do you want me to make sure that intolerant people and homophobes buy their tickets?” he said then.

Subsequently, while promoting a film, Michael B. Jordan spoke about Garfield's idea: "I don't have an opinion on it," was the first thing he said.
“I think that many times in comics, if there is a character you have grown up with, and they change them, sometimes people don't like it . If it is about race or other characteristics that cannot be changed and that would be detrimental to the character, I think they should not be changed,” he stated.
